Everyone talks about cholesterol

So many of us have high cholesterol problems. Cholesterol has become the watch word for heart disease. Why can't they find a medication that rids high cholesterol and doesn't cause muscle pain? I have been on different doses and types of statins and after a while my body revolts. My cholesterol is genetically induced. Family history of high cholesterol, and diet doesn't seem to help. Anyone have any suggestions?

Both my husband and I have high cholesterol. In our cases it is hereditary. We strive to eat healthy and exercise regularly.

I don't even know what mine is!! I've spent so much time in the hospital and with doctors that I assume it's been tested and recorded. It must be normal or someone would have jumped on me, right?

HIgh cholesterol that is genetic is very difficult to aleve. Healthy cooking, eating, exercise and medications are the main tools available. One must continue to strive and use these tools.

Nancy,
You are such and upbeat person. I love reading your posts. Don't count on doctors to check your cholesterol count. They may do it, but ask. Sometimes they get caught up with the present. It isn't like is was years ago when your family doctor knew all about YOU!

Hi ANGELA; GRANA here; I too had the same problem,Dr suggested a coQ10 supplement to avoid those muscle pains &brain fade); worked just fine but is ratherexpensice.She reccomended150mg day.They only come in100mg 120mg or 200 mg size.I alternated those( 100 &200mg), averaging150 mg. a day but need to buy two strengths at a time to get the right dosage.Hubby's dr had him start taking Omega 3 fish oil (1,000 mg daily w/ correct evels of EPA & DHA . My doc aproved of it for me too; As a BONUS it keeps skin looking more youhthfull & helps prevent/treat dry eyes.Buy the best quality you can afford,preferably w/ toxic minerals removed(mercury,etc) Add/eat a higher fiber diet :rice, (oats brown bice & whole wheat; flax seeds( ground, added to baked foods, salads&hot cereals, yogurt) eat legumes; (peanuts beans & lentils); more fruits& veggies( raw when possible) limitting animal fats(leaner meats,smaller portions & no more than 2 egg yolks a week.Avoid partially hydrogenated & trans fats( in most margarines &commercially prepared baked goods) I cut my cholesterol down to 122 in 2-1/2 months ( half of what it was). Doc wants it below 100; so 'm still fighting the same battle as you! Products may legally claim to have NO TRANS FATS but may have as much as 3 per serving; usually a lot smaller portion than we normally eat...... best thing is to avoid partially hydrogenated oils. Use liquid fats( canola,olive & sesame oils. Butter is actualy healthier than margarine

I getthem mail rder( buy2gget 3free specia offer fromPuritan pride..... shipping Is modest, customer service is terrific; evenif if it's ourr mistake, they ake care f us w/ o xtra shipping charges.
MyMother got brain fade from statins I began t that too before coenzyme Q10....hubby doesn't ;ikethe price but to keep me pain free & mentallly sharp he has to oder it & doesn't complain TOO OFTEN

In my case high cholesterol is hereditary.My cholesterol was 384 fourteen years ago and now it hs been lowered to 160 which is great.I lowered it with diet and medication.I swear by oatmeal and fish oil they do work.

My test results were great ! I do eat a lot of rich foods but in moderation..High cholesterol runs in my family and I do take Simvastatin everyday. I have added a fish oil suppliment to help lower it further.The last time my cholesterol was 160 this time it was 118 so the fish oil is helping.

Gale, Hubby takes the same medication for cholesterol as you do. It also runs in
his family. I had blood tests done in Jan. and mine are fine.

An easy, inexpensive (free) way to get cholesterol tested...Donate Blood.
When you donate blood they do some testing. Not a fasting test but that can be done later. So every 56 days I give blood and I get my cholesterol checked. Several times a year I can get a fasting one done I just let them know when I want to come in and have it done. I get the blood drawn then come back later to give blood.
My doctor also does a test during my physical.
My HDL or healthy cholesterol is high so he has not gotten on my case about taking meds to lower the LDL.

I too had muscle pan& brain fade issuesw/ statin drugs.One dr switchedme off statins to TIMED RELEASE NIACIN tablets & they lowered my cholesterol tilI I turned65+ yo.Weight loss & exercise were suggested but being partially rlyzed & confined to a wheelchair makes that difficult/ nearlyimpiossible for me!!!!!!!!!! sugars( all types increse trygliceride levels, also bad.( stil working on that area )
I've cut way down on those; increased fiber & I take fish oil w/omega 3 epa & dha
My newer doc suggested co enzyme Q10 gel capsules 150 mg daily; It's 's pricey & not covered by insurance but it is lowering my cholesterol gradually w/o bad side efects!
; if weight loss& daily exercise are possible, foryou givethat atry first;If not ask your dr about & give co Q 10 a ry.I get mine mail orderr( often @t buy 2 get 3 free I still take statins but have much less muscle pain& find my brain fade less of a problem than before Co enzymeQ10....My cholesterol is down from 275 to 215 in one year.My dr wants it BELOW 205 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One would asume your DR felt your cholesterol wasOK or would have ementioned it ???But , perhaps he/she felt you had other more pressing things to worry about at that time?

Exercise is the best way to raise the HDL (good cholesterol). Fish oil will lower triglycerides. If the HDL is high enough the docs don't worry about total cholesterol numbers. There's the ratio they go by and if that is good I guess all is well.
