WASHINGTON (AP) - The Agriculture Department says meat giant Cargill is recalling 36 million pounds of ground turkey linked to a death in California and at least 76 other salmonella illnesses.

Illnesses in the outbreak date back to March and have been reported in 26 states coast to coast.

Government officials say that even contaminated ground turkey is safe to eat if it is cooked to 165 degrees and handled properly before cooking.

I cook mine long enough anyway, but if you use turkey meat, be extra careful.

Pat - I saw that on TV news this morning and was astonished .... 36 million pounds !!?!!?
Missouri is one of the stated that has been hit with deaths thanks to salmonella.

I actually had a message on my answering machine today from Giant Eagle telling me that their records indicate that I purchased
ground turkey in the past six months and that it has been recalled with information on how to return it. I thought that was very proactive of them. I've never had a message like this before.

It's disturbing that they waited until AUGUST to recall a product that has presented problems since March! Anyone else outraged by that?

I got a call once about cat food that was recalled - from Kroger. I had read recently that there had not been a recall because there was not a good way to track what the actual problem was. It also was so wide spread and pretty random. Obviously more people are cooking the meat correctly, so they do not have a problem. Plus the article said that it took a long time to get test results back. That seemed odd to me.

I did see the article and thought it a bit strange that they didn't have a list of the brand names that it was sold under. With millions of pounds of turkey I would think it probably was sold under more than one brand logo.

You are probably right HM. There are probably many names & brands. That is true of a lot of the things we buy. The same product - just with a different label.

Yes, and took note of the stores that were listed. I don't use ground turkey much but will still stay away until the "all clear" is given!!

My local store - Martin's has announced a recall on turkey meat. So maybe more stores will be doing the same. I probably won't buy any turkey for a while. Which is actually silly, because I always cook mine long enough anyway. It is just the idea though.

Thanks for the info.When ever I use turkey I use it in chili,stuffed peppers things like that and always cook it very well.I'm going to not use it for awhile.Thanks .

Our local TV listed stores and labels that were affected by this recall. An enormous number who label the ground turkey as their own but it all was processed by the same company. Now that is scary! They advertise that their brand is better than ordinary turkey but it all comes from the same processer and packing plant. Only the label that wraps aroung the outside if different.
It is enough to cause me to swear off of turkey.
