When you want to make spaghetti using ground beef, you can rinse the ground beef and that helps in the reduction of the fat.

That is a new one on me. I never heard of rinsing ground beef, but I will look up the website. You CAN teach and old dog new tricks.

Several years ago, even though I bought lean ground beef, I tried to remove ALL the fat. And I did that by cooking/frying the beef then dumping it into a big bowl of water. When I thought all the fat was on top of the water I tried to lift it all off to get rid off it. Then I drained the beef and used it. In my opinion the beef was tasteless. I could not eat anything prepared that way.

Hi Nancy you aren't supposed to put the ground beef into the water but put it into a fine strainer and pour four cups of hot water over it and allow it to drain.Then the beef can be used in sauces,casseroles or tacos,which add flavor.There is no need to buy the more expensive lower fat beef for the uses I have listed.The fat content will be very similar to that of the more expensive beef after rinsing.Save the more expensive ground beef for use in dishes that cannot be rinse such as stuffed green peppers,cabbage,burgers,meat balls and meatloaf.

For the cost savings, it may be worth trying the hot water rinse of cooked, crumbled hamburger to cut some fat. In scanning the article it sounds like the rinsed hamburger should definitely only be used in seasoned dishes. Thanks for sharing, Gale. You're such a bounty of information!

I MADE LASAGNA LAST MONTH FOR MY SON AND MINDY AND USED ITALIAN SAUSAGE/GROUND CHUCK. WHEN I DRAINED THE SAUSAGE, I RINSED IT UNDER HOT WATER. THANKS GAYLE FOR THE INFO. i WILL RINSE ALL MY BEEF NOW TOO!

You are all so very welcome,I love to cook and bake.Sometimes skimming off the fat isn't enough.That type of fat is not healthy nor taste appealing.I also refrigerate my soups to allow the fat to rise to the top and harden so it can be easily removed.If I'm going to eat fat it will be in the form of sour cream and butter! lol.

Sorry I forgot to mention this,when I fry breaded pork chops or chicken I also bake it in the oven for awhile.I place the fried meat on some old cooling racks that I have placed on a sheet pan.You would be surprised at how much grease cooks out.Always fry foods in hot oil so your food absorbs less of the frying oil.Broiling also cooks more of the grease out of meats.

Hi Angela,From what I read on the site no you do not lose any nutritional value.The article is quit long you have to keep scrolling down it seems to be at the end but it's not.This beef should be used in sauces ,casseroles,tacos chili,where ever you use loose ground beef.Using the cheaper 70/30 ground beef will save you money.Save the more expensive ground beef when you can't rinse,such as meatballs,meatloaf ,etc.Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner,I just forgot about this forum.
