Not in the grocerystorebut in a restaurantfor Father'sday( mytreat)..We never received the honey wheat bread thesteakhouseis famous for.Hubbyasked& wasrudely toldthat"you haveto ask for it"we did & finally received 2 slices; not the usual 1/2 loaf per table we usually get.Our meal had taken 1/2 hour to arrive. and the bread would havebeen an appropriate offering. I phoned &  mentioned that  their customer service had slipped; too long a wait forfood &  a rude,uncaring server,w/ an " attitude' .I was invited to please comeeback & my mealwould be on her( service mgr).Hubby refused to go back for several weeks.Finally we got some good news to celebrate( our new non-bundled TV, internet phone would save us $40 month.We went to the steakhouse expecting hubby's BBQ sandwhich & chili meal to be comped, not my steak dinner!
we had a different waitress & hot bread was brought while we waited for our meals to arrive.I was ffred extras & upgrades( not accepted)I It was mentioned that there were other larger; higher priced, premium ) steaks on the menu & The steakhouse wanted us to have a memoreable dining experience.I told them that the small steak I  ordered is always perfect for me& I've no need for a larger one.The mgr & server both wanted to make up for the previous bad experience & were assured thay had done that w/ excellent food & service, this time.The mgr helped us out through the dble. doors himself [out to theparking lot]
Hubby's soup(chili) wich were both comped, including 9% meals tax & gratuity. We could not be charged  State's 9% tax both meals , since  bothmealswere being comped d", we got both meals( mine a Caesar salad & small seak waa veggie side were comped.Hubby wanted to leave a cash tip but the$20 bill had in my wallet was just too much, to leave. Both Amanda & Chris refused to bring change( the meal was totally on the house, including tax& tip..we had a terrific meal of exactly what we both wanted, cooked to perfection & were promptly seated( in a busy time period, all for only a smile & honest compliments; small cost for  a GREAT DINING EXPERIENCE.
Hubby told Chris " WE WILL BE BACK" Smile
Sometimes speaking up helps a place improve itself; the bad server was no longer there she had had other complaints & ignored  the management's  repremands.Chris told us that the job Of host/server requires treating guests like welcome guests not Like an inconvenience, He Amanda(server)& KRISTIN (service mgr)all were obviously aware of that.Winkwe could have had  appetizers; BIG steaks/ seafood and dessert & coffee; but getting what we wanted was our desire.
What do you think?
Should we have taken advantage & over odered& eaten too much just because it was FREE?

When the occasion has come up that a meal or a portion of the meal is "comped" I always TIP on the full price of the meal.  I also TIP in cash.  There have been rare cases when I have had to TIP on my credit card but that is maybe once a year (or two even).
I figure the wait staff does the same work if the meal is comped or not, as a matter of fact they may do more because a comped meal is usually done to make up for poor service or poor quality a previous time.
If the meal is being comped I order what I normally would, nothing over the top.  For example I am not going to order the $30.00 Sea Bass to replace the chicken breast that I ordered the last time.
It is difficult enough in the food service business without people taking advantage of a situation.

most times when i've had a problem       the problem meal was comped immediately and a desert offered

also i always base my tip on the full price of any meal , i usually pay in cash if the server takes the ticket back to the cashier       because i've had a problem w/ my visa/atm card (i no longer have credit cards)  so i don't ever allow it to be taken out of sight anymore
if i'm at i-hop say, and go to a cashier i usually use the card and add the tip there

Sometimes, you just have to let the manager know why you are not happy with your server and/or your meal.  Sometimes, you have to go to "corporate" to get it taken care of......twice that has happened to me.  The first time, it was the attitude/sass from the cashier in a "Fast Food" place, and the second time was the attitude (I know it all!) of the cashier in one of the nicer and friendlier "chains" when a coupon was presented.  Both times, gift cards were mailed to me.  Corporate is always thankful when a "wrong doing" is commited......it hurts their business if it continues. I would have notified the Manager; but he was not there that day.  Just yesterday, the Manager called me and apologized. (Corporate had already notified him of the complaint.)  We go to that place frequently, and he wanted us to know that he values our business.  I assured him that we would be there very soon.

We had an amusing experience at Sticky Fingers in Myrtle Beach.  I asked the server - who looked to be a young teen - for coffee with cream.  She brought the coffee but not the cream.  When I asked for the cream, she replied:  "You'll have to wait because I have several other tables to wait on right now".  

I was able to flag the manager and explain that someone needed to take her aside and quietly explain her error.  I didn't want him to do that while I was sitting there with my husband but wanted it done in a way that didn't embarass her.

The manager brought the cream to me and when the waitress came back to the table, it was obvious that someone had instructed her to handle the situation differently from what she had done.  She did a fine job from there on throughout our meal.  

Because my husband and I operated a small restaurant in central New York, we know the hard work that goes into restaurant work.  Almost without exception, we tip well.

It's always nice to know that your business is appreciated.  Years ago we went to a steak house and my salad had a piece of steel wool in it.  When I showed it to the waitress, I got a look from her that seemed to say I put that in the salad.  My husband asked to speak with a manager who also seemed to have that attitude.  No offer of any kind to make up for their mistake so we never went back there.  Seems that a lot of people may have been disappointed with them since they closed down not long after that.

On the flip side, I have a neighbor who always complains at every restaurant in the hopes of getting "freebies".  Then she or her husband will brag about what they got for free.  Needless to say, after hearing that, I will never go to a restaurant with her lol.  That's just bad manners.

 AsI mentioned,I had only a $20 bill & was refused change to be able to tip in cash.$5-$8 would have been a fair-to generous tip;   But both the mgr &  waitress refused, insisting that we were to accept the entire mal@ no charge in the hope that we would return on a regular basis.In the past this good waitress was given a 20% tip by us.We always order less expensive items & no drinks  so that we can afford to tip 20% if deserved,If service is poor we leave $1 & an explaination of why so low a tip.If service is mediocre wetip10%-15%; more than other patrons from what I can see.
On our anniversary a few years ago, we were comped the deluxe iramisu dessert, personalized w/ our names &  the correct # of years, ( 45).
we tipped according to thecost of the dessert, making the meal w/tip cost more than we would normally pay for the entire m w/o dessert. We never short the server unless  the service was deplorable.A delayed meal, is forgiven if the delay is acknowledged & explained  usually w/ hot bread & butter  to hold us til the meal arrives.
If money s tight; we do take out  sowe haveno need to shortcange theserver;we always sayPLEASE THANK YOU & TIP  15-20% even in BUFFETS
A7 tip 10-15%.A sever can make or break a meal & we try to  reward a server who made the meal more enjoyable for us.

that reminded me of a long ago person i ran into
i often went to a small local cafeteria that had really wonderful food
when you went thru the line you could have one entree , plus all of the other selections you wanted including deserts
one day i noticed a man raising cain with them because when he went to the bathroom, they cleared his table, and he was allowed to go back through
when i paid for my meal, i mentioned this to cashier------------she laughed and said that the man did the same thing every time he came in                 that was really rude

We have a few places that we go to frequently and that is because the service is always good.If we go some where and the service is bad we never go back.We always tip the going rate.If our service is good to excellent the server gets a great tip.We went to Carraba's for our anniversary  the server knew it was our anniversary and the service and meal were over the top.The server was tipped very generously.She was so thrilled she gave us both a hug.When you go out for a meal I don't think you should have to ask for anything,the server should be on top of that making sure you always have your drink filled, if you order steak you shouldn't have to ask for steak sauce or ketchup for your fries.Noticing these little things are what makes the difference between just OK service and great service.

Good service or otherwise, if a meal is comped or you have a discount because of a coupon or loyalty reward or whatever, I always base my tip on what the tab would have been. Now, if the service has been poor, I may give little or no tip. But, if I'm really dissatisfied I will speak up, usually at home and call or send them an email. Some places even have a survey for you to do, check your receipt. I have heard of people who always complain about their meal in hopes of getting something for free. These people also buy something and then take it back, there's always something wrong with it.

I sent an email to McDonald's about a week ago.  I rarely go to a fast food place but I just had to have an Iced Tea.  So I pulled through the drive through and both the person taking the order and the person filling the order were outstandingly nice.  I told them but thought I would send an email to corporate just to let them know.
I got an email back thanking me and I was told that my comments would be forwarded to the employees as well as the manager. (I gave the time and date that I went through so I guess it is pretty easy to figure out who was at the windows at the time.)  I was told that they rarely get comments like mine and it was nice that I took the time to relay my experience.

I don't know what is more sad, the fact that we do not take the time to thank people for doing a great job or the fact that when we do find someone that does a great job with a smile and pleasant personality we think it is  unusual.

I hate when I receive bad service at places.  Most of the time, I just deal with it and don't go back.  I do think that people should be fair and not take advantage of situations like that.  Also, when I do receive great service, I try to let someone know about it.  I know how much it meant to me when I was working to get a compliment so I try to give them out when I can.

 Thenext timewereturned to that same teakhouse,they tried to seat us in the BAR, suosedly ecause the booths therefolded allowing me in mywheelchair)too justdriveup to the abble.Huby got  irate;Thehostess didn;tk know what to do.Itold erthat we preferedbeing seated in thediningroom& nottheBAR. We were imediately shown to anoter driveup tablein the diningroom We had n obviously new server who did verything perfecty!, takinghubby from his iritation at being forced to sitt  in the bar to being in a really good mood.My  lobster& shrimp chowder had too much lack pepper in it.Our server( new ) suggested ra eplacement ( diferent variety ) since the  whole batch/potwas probablythesame.Ichose  another variety& she eturned shortly to make ureiit was satisfactory & apologized again for the  over peppered first bowl.She broughthe hot bread on tme offered more  to go along w/our modestly priced soup & salad lunchspecialmealsmeals.Shewasgiven a cash tip of 20%& the hostess&  service mgr were both told ow wel we were taken care of by  our server.Theboth beamed w/pleasure & I believethey had instructedherto treat uwell sincethat wasourfirst  visit since thecomped meal...Nowhubbyis looking fowrd o our next visitto the steakhouse;perhaps for a dinner& not  for lunchhtime specials Money mouth
