BEER BREAD RECIPE

Several days ago I made Beer Bread.  It was quite easy, had only a few ingredients and was very good.  If anyone is interested, here is the recipe:

4 cups self-rising flour
1-1/2 cups warm beer (any flavor)
3/4 cup sugar
3 tablespoons butter (melted)

Mix all dry ingredients with the warm beer.  The dough should be thick and chunky.  Place the dough into the greased bread baker and press dough down.  Make a well in the center and pour the melted butter in the well.  Place baker in a COLD oven at 325 degrees for
1-1/2 hours.  Remove from the oven and let cool for 10 - 15 minutes.

Feel free to experiment with different beers and ales for a savory taste.  The darker the beer, the deeper the flavor and taste.

NOTE:  I used a Beer Bread Baker I had received two years ago for Christmas.  It is made of pottery.

ALSO NOTE:  I did not have self-rising flour, therefore I added 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt for every cup of All Purpose flour.

Hope you enjoy it.

Does the beer add calories or carbs?  I know the alcohol is supposed to evaporate.

Hi Marie, I make beer bread too.I made up beer bread dry mix and instuctions for Christmas presents.I thought it was a good idea for a guys gift,so easy for them to mix and bake and have hot bread in just an hour.It goes great with chili or soup.I packed the dry ingredients in quart canning jars with instructions. We eat a lot of clementines,so I saved the little wood crates and packed the jars in that.I incuded, pepper jelly, chili seasoning and even soup in a jar dry ingredients, everyone love it.

Hi Pat,I would think the calories and carbs would still be there because of the yeast that is used.I might be wrong but I would count the calories and carbs as it was like a beer that you would drink. I did some snooping and the calories for a beer can be up to 180 calories and 18 grams of carbs. This was the high end.One was 120 calories with only 5 carbs

I've made beer bread ever since my friend brought some when they came for dinner. It is delicious and easy to make. I sometimes add cheese and jalapenos too.

Several yearsago I posted aBEER BREAD RECIPE  on theold site( swapped recipes). It isquite different & if you are interested incutting down on carbs it might be a better choice for you .
Makes one loaf in standard size loaf pan:

lightly grease a standard size loaf pan&  set aside
In medium mixing bowl:stir to combine ingredients
3 cups self rising flour
2TBS sugar

Pour in one12oz can of  warm beer [your choice; try different ones; til you findt he one you like best
OR *** you maysubstitute a  warm 12oz can of lemon-lime flavored soda (7 not down)Wink or club soda/ seltzer)
this eliminates any concern over beer carbs & calories
Stir beer into dry ingredients, eveny.Place dough into prepared pan& pat down gently to get dough to  reach sides of pan.Place in a warm spot while oven preheats to 350' (about 15 minutes)
Place fliled loaf pan onto center  rack of preheated oven
Bake 45-55 min. til golden on top & the bottom of loaf sounds hollow to a firm thump of fingers ( just like a standard bread recipe) Cool on rack to eating temperature.
Serve w/ butter & /or honey as a side dish to soups; chili, stew or  a salad.

Experiment w/ cheese shreds & seasonings[ garlic power,  onion powder, chili powder, cinnamon( w/ extra sugar & raisins) carraway or poppy seeds( nice w/ lemon -lime soda  stirred into dry ingredients before adding beer or soda.
If,like me; you prefer whole grain bread; use 3 cups whole wheat flour w/ 1TBS b.p & 1/2 tsp salt; pre- mixed intoflour, before adding liqid.
