Nancy, I don't freeze chocolate chips either.  They last a really long time just out.  I date my bags and I've had some 2 years and they are fine.  Butterscotch and white are a different story. They need to be at least refrigerated to stay good.
I don't shop Walmart, but one of my regular grocery stores had Nestle chips for $2 and the next week they had the dark for $2.50.  I used my coupons for a real bargain.

A storage question for everybody     ......   Please - do you freeze the bags of nuts you buy?
Using a magic marker I write the expiration date across the front  (of course, I do that with every bag of chips too).

Yesterday, when I was in that wonderful, "fancy" grocery store - the one I love so much ........... they had all varieties Nestles Chocolate Chips for $1.99.
I bought a few.   I wanted more but I worry about storage.

I checked at WalMart here(northern Illinois) and they also had the chips for $2.28.  Most of the grocery stores also have the chips on sale, usually for $1.99.  The problem with the grocery stores is that they usually also have a limit of one or two at the sale price.

Just this morning, I paid $2.19 at Meijers!  That's a bargain!!!  Note:  I freeze all of my Nestle Chips and I also freeze all of the nuts I buy to accompany the chips!  Never had a problem.  I do allow them to come to room temperature though before I use them in a recipe.

At my Walmart this morning they were still $2.28 ............ makes me wish I had bought more yesterday at my "fancy" store in  the next town.

I always freeze the bags of nuts that I buy.  I get the large bags at Costco, and I couldn't possibly use them up before they became rancid, so freezing is the way to go.  I've never had a problem with them and I've even used them right from the freezer.
As for chocolate chips I usually just keep them in the pantry.  I've had bags of the white chips that did go bad, but the others seem to keep just fine.  Maybe I should freeze the white ones at least.

Barbara, I've had the butterscotch ones go bad.  They taste like soap.  I think it is because only the chocolate ones are "real".  The white, butterscotch, peanutbutter etc. all have other fats in them.
