Me too Verlee -- I don't venture from a recipe any more than using Dark Chocolate when the recipe calls for Semi-Sweet.   Currently I'm working hard on learning to venture but I'm taking small steps. However ...   ....97% of the things I bake are for other people ..... They can toss it out!!!

I've found that most baked things are pretty forgiving in what you do to them.  i substitute whole wheat flour a lot for either all or part of the regular flour.

In Response to Re: something different to do with a brownie mix : I noticed the Carmalita Bars call for melted butter.  To me, that's asking for oil but  I probably wouldn't use as much. My mother's old brownie recipe that has 1 T Karo in it calls for butter. I use oil, but the first time I used as much oil as butter it was too oily. I now use half the amount and it is perfect.  I like to experiment with recipes.  That might come from taking an Experimental Foods class when I was in grad school.

Judy,  I like to experiement with recipes too. I would have loved to go to
an experimental foods class! I bet it was a lot of fun!!

Oil?!?   Oil instead of butter !?!   I've never tried that ..... I've never even thought of it.  How  does that affect  the taste? Is this more something new I should try? I KNOW the Carmalita Bars have to be tried !!!  lol lol

Nancy, another variation you could try...I was looking at the recipe for the White Chip Island Blondies much like the cookies you write so much about..anyway one of the comments made someone replaced the 1/3 Cup of butter with 1/2 Cup crushed pineapple.  Now that would truly be a tropical island treat. The taste of the pineapple with the coconut and macadamia nuts and the white chocolate chips sounds like perfection.  I will be trying them this week.  Will let you know how they turn out using the pineapple.

Did they ever restore the part of the site where we can share recipes?  This would certainly be a candidate for that, as well as the recipe in the original message for this Forum!

Be still my heart...a healthy brownie. This sounds very good. Have you ever tried making Carmalita Bars?  They are somewhat like this. Here is the recipe for Oatmeal Carmalitas 2 Cups flour 2 Cups quick cooking oats..not instant 1 1/2 Cups firmly packed brown sugar 1 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp salt 1 Cup butter, melted 1 (12 ounce) package semi sweet chocolate chips 1/2 Cup pecans or walnuts..toasted 1 Cup caramel ice cream topping 3 Tb flour In a small bowl mix caramel topping and flour together until smooth. Set aside. Pre heat oven to 350 Stir together the first 5 ingredients in a large bowl.  Add butter, stirring until mixture is crumbly.  Set aside half the mixture (about 2 3/4 Cups).  Press remaining mixture into bottom of a lightly greased 13X9 pan. Sprinkle top evenly with chocolate chips and nuts. Pour caramel mixture over the top of the chocolate chips and nuts. Sprinkle reserved crumb mixture evenly over the top of the caramel topping mixture. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until light golden brown. Cool completely in pan on wire rack.  Cut into bars. These can be stored at room temperature for up to 1 week...haha like they would really last a week...Or freeze for up to 1 month (they might last in the freezer..tucked in the back, under a bag of Brussels sprouts!) This is easier to remove from the pan if you line the pan with parchment.  Makes clean up so much easier as well.

I just tried to post a recipe in the Shared Recipes, and it got rejected again with the message that this part of the site is still gooey. I have told VBB about this problem, and they are working on it.
