pumpkin shortage

my newspaper this morning stated that pumpkins from the east coast had gotten ruined by huricaine irene and that the growers were even trying to find and buy pumpkins from around the country to try and keep up to their buyers. Does this mean that we will have a shortage of the canned pumpkin as well? I am going to have to look now for canned as the paper also said that the price of pumpkins now have almost doubled. time to stock up again. happy baking.

The hurricanes may have gotten the east coast pumpkin crop but the drought nearly wiped out the pumpkin supply in central IL where much of the pumpkin supply for the canneries is grown.

Thanxfall the dvice & tips.Having gone through the pumpkn shrtage several years ago;I purchased 2 cansofLibby's pumpin on sale earlier this year( & used coupons.I expected to h ave nough to bake 2pies, an ample amount for us empty nesters.
Then hubby announced

( whenI mentioned preparing my dried lowcarb breadcubes for Thanksgiving's meal[ I do that in advance] every year for my own low carb stuffing mix. I won't be baking pumpkin pies this year unless we cravesome during the fall months

aregooingagain to the hotels Thanksgivingfeast again this year.
If the hotel doesn't have their price feast thisyear( due to depressed economy & fear of no attendance,I'l be back to making my usualThanksgiving meal for 2:
1/2 turkey
qt ofstuffing casserole
liteturkey gravey( giblets optional)
acorn squash w/ peas &pearl onions
cranberry sauce
pumpkin pie & whipped cream topping.
Huby already budgeted for the "FEAST"

& we're both looking foward to it

It is always good to stock up when pumpkin is on sale. Then you are prepared for the holidays. And maybe some extra Fall baking as well.

I like to stock up on canned pumpkin as well when it's in season, as I use it all year. It lasts on the shelf for at least a year, so there's no harm in stocking up!

Thanks for the "heads up". Guess I will have to look around for some more canned pumpkin. Although the stores seem to have plenty of pumpkins out already for Halloween(personally I think it's a bit too early) . Never hurts to stock up since the prices will probably go up around the holidays.

There is no Pumpkin Shortage ! Someone asked the question in ASK VBB They said to look in the stores the end of this month and the first couple of weeks in October,the stores should have the canned Pumpkin by then.

I think we "create" a shortage. People hear that there will be a shortage so some run out and buy lots of cans, leaving empty shelves for others. When they find pumpkin someplace else they also buy more than they need or wanted but "there is a shortage" so they in turn leave empty shelves.
I do use pumpkin year round so when I see it I will purchase it. I like to keep 4 cans on hand as I use 2 for my pumpkin bread. I don't think there is a need to get a case. I did find some on sale, a close out a few years ago the cans were .25 each. Needless to say that time I did buy a case. (or 2 )

Other areas may have a shortage, tlocal farms & some stores are slling any size pumpkin @$.29#Therea are so manyquite large pumpkins piled up for sale outside the grocery store that was hard to get to the entry way door yesterday

There was an article in one of the papers in MI that said MI had an average
crop this year and they would be helping to supply the east coast with
pumpkins!! I'm planning on buying pumpkin on Wed. I want to make a
pumpkin rollup and Nikki's pumpkin bread recipe. I also want to make
pumpkin whoopie pies.

I just purchased 2 more pie pumpkins. They were .49 a pound. I figure with the cleaning out the "guts" and then baking with the moisture loss it is probably the same as a can of pumpkin but my grandson and I have fun baking them. And he likes to put the seeds out for the birds. (if I don't eat them first!)
