Someone brought cookies for us volunteers at the Food Pantry yesterday and they were fabulous. They were chocolate chip with walnuts, and the dough was reminiscent of German chocolate. They're difficult to describe, but I'd love to know if anyone has a recipe that sounds similar????

Maybe these cookies were made from a German Chocolate Cake Mix.  They sound delicious!

Here is a recipe form one of my Cake Mix Books
Chocolate Dreams
1 package Devil's Food Cake mix, (you could use the German Chocolate flavor to get the flavor you recall)
2 Eggs
1/2 Cup vegetable oil
2 Cups semi sweet chocolate chips
3/4 Cup chopped nuts
Pre heat oven 375 degrees F.
Greased or parchment lined cookie sheets.
In a large mixer bowl combine cake mix, eggs, and oil.  With a wooden spoon or on low speed of mixer, mix for 1 minute or until blended.
Dough will be stiff.
Stir in chocolate chips and nuts.
Drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls onto cookie sheets.  Bake 8 to 10 minutes or just until set.  Cool 1 minute on cookie sheet on wire rack, then transfer cookies to wire rack to cool completely.

I hope this helps.....

The recipe that I gave did give an option to replace the nuts with coconut.  Personally I would add both the nuts and the coconut.

Nikki -- one of my own favorite cookies is the standard chocolate chip cookie recipe but omit the chips and pile in lots and lots of pecans and coconut.        hmmmmmmmmmm .... I wonder if I can bear today's heat enough to stir up a batch?~!

Nancy, there wasn't any coconut in these cookies, but I also don't see why you couldn't add it.

Fran and Nikki, thanks for the recipes. They both sound REALLY good. I'm going to be in Seattle all next week, and San Jose the week after that, but will try both recipes when my feet get planted firmly back at home!! I'll let you all know what the taste test results are!!!

Verlee - I'll be trying the two recipes very soon.  I couldn't tonight because I have just an 8 oz pkg of cream cheese and neither of the cake mixes.  I'll get those on my next trip to the store.
I was inspired enought to make a nice batch of the old coconut/pecan favorites.  I gotta' get those things in the freezer - out of my reach!

nikki-----------
one question for you
when we got the cookies mixed----------they were so crumbly------------we couldn't use the scoop because it fell apart on the cookie sheet-------------i almost added something, but i didn't know what-------but he rolled on in his hand and it held together---------so i told him to bake one pan to see how it came out-------i'm glad we did because they are so good

I only occasionally buy cake mixes and they have to be on a really good sale for me to do it.  I usually keep one chocolate on hand to make the VBB Upsidedown Chocolate Cream cheese Cake.  Maybe I'll use it to try the cookies, as I always have cream cheese in the fridge

It has been a while since I made them.  It is possible that since I probably made them with my Grandson I did not add the nuts so I did not notice that the mixture was particularly crumbly.
Glad they worked out for you.

Wow, these cookie recipes sound great.  Thanks for sharing Fran and Nikki.  Great way to use up those cake mixes I have hanging around lol.

Think I may have to wait to make these.  Supposed to get very hot here this week, they said 100 for Thursday, YIKES.  What will it be August?  Geez!
