Failure cookies

This is best looking sheet out of five. :-(
I wanted dark chocolate cookies with crushed candy canes. It didn't work. Took a long time to "peel" all those canes.
I wonder why the celophane is almost impossible to remove.
The cookies flattened out horribly and the canes melted and ran all over - to turn hard as glass when cool.
Oh well ---------

NANCY ;They don't look so bad to me & I can prmise you , my hubby would have enjoyed eating them anyway( he's a real trooper/brave soldier) He's had lots of experience w/ oops cookies & often dunks them into his cuppa coffee/tea & proclaims them "realy good; folowed by: "next time just let me buy some day old cookies(marked down to 1/2 price) & you take it easy & read your book w/one of the kitties in your lap"

I used the recipe for "Mint Chocolate Delights" .... chocolate cookies with Nestles chocolate and mint morsels. I've made it before (without the mint chips) and and it's a good recipe. I use half regular cocoa and half dark chocolate.

The problem was the peppermint.. I think I remember reading a recipe somewhere that made a similar cookie without the crushed peppermint......... baking the cookie and sprinkling it on immediately after removing the sheet from the oven.
I do love peppermint and wish this worked.

Sorry your cookies didn't turn out like you wanted Nancy. Andes Candies has a peppermint baking chip that I used to change up a recipe last year. It really makes for a colorful cookie and the chips are soft like regular chocolate chips but with a peppermint taste and color. Most of the stores around here like grocery stores, Target and Walmart sell them before the holidays.

Yes, H.M., Youre right ... and I have a couple bags of the green and chocolate Andes baking chips in my freezer along with their red and white chips - Peppermint Crunch Baking Chips, Creamy Chips with Bits of Peppermint Crunch.
But I just had to try the real peppermint sticks. ~sigh~

Sorry your cookies didn't turn out as you wanted. I'll bet they still tasted delicious. As Ann mentioned, you could dunk them if they were on the hard side. Try again with the Andes baking chips.

Thanks Marie .... I did turn to the peppermint Andes chips. I bought many bags to stock up and I'm glad I did. They are no longer in any local stores. The Andes green and chocolate mint chips are still here but not the much better red and white.

I'm on a serious diet, Nancy, they look great to me! I'd probably eat them and think they were wonderful. Great attempt for you anyway. Everyone has a flop every now and then but think of all the successes you've had. Sure is aggravating though isn't it?

Nancy, when the peppermints began to melt, it added extra, unwanted moisture to your cookies. Perhaps a bit more flour.

PS: to peel them, chill them in the freezer a bit then run the tip of a sharp paring or steak knife down them.

I dislike having any kind of cooking failure - considering the cost of ingredients and the time invested. However, to err is human and there are worse things that can happen in life. I know that sometimes I take myself too seriously.

For crushing candy canes I just put them in a freezer zip bag with the wrapper on. Then beat them with a hammer for awhile. Then I open the bag and remove the plastic overwrap, while shaking out any candy cane chunks that are left in it. I think it's easier that way.

I love the peppermint crunch Andees mint baking pieces. I even made a fudge with them that everyone loves. You can add them to brownie mixes to give them a wonderful flavor. Also great to take pretzels dunked in white chocolate and then coat them with the peppermint chip pieces, yummmmm!

I bet they still were better than some cookies I have tried to make. LOL Perhaps you should try a small batch of a new type using most of the dough with a tried and true recipe. That way you know you will have good cookies & if one cookie sheet of cookies is not so good it won't be such a big deal.
