Easy 175 Cake

1 devil's food cake mix

1 stick butter

3 eggs (divided use)

1 6-ounce package of chocolate chips

1 cup chopped nuts

1 8-ounce package cream cheese

4 cups powdered sugar

Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat a 9x13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray; set aside.

Mix together the cake mix, butter and 1 egg.

The more you stir, the stiffer it will get so make sure you mix thoroughly. Press into the bottom of the prepared pan. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and nuts. Mix cream cheese, remaining eggs and powdered sugar. Pour over the chips and nuts.

Bake for about 25 minutes, or until the top is light golden brown. Do not overbake. Cool completely, then cut into squares.

It like of looks like the St. Louis gooey butter cake, only chocolate.  Might be worth a try as it sure looks good

  yes we know,
paula didn't invent the "gooey" recipes
treebeard's in Houston est 1978        has had it on the menu since opening day      but I don't think they invented it either
I have been making it almost as long             I even had it in shared recipes with chocolate chips in the middle until they lost them
I haven't tried it w/ chocolate    but thinking about it  you could use almost any flavor of cake mix and still come out w/ delicious bars

I love Gooey Butter Cakes and I have made them in many flavors.
Pumpkin with a spice cake I think was one favorite.
I also make a Lemon one for a shower and it was great.  I used Lemon cake and it had a very nice lemony flavor.
I am partial to the chocolate though, as if that is a surprise to anyone....
The pumpkin does run a very close second though.
