I'm home from shopping ..... ready to stir up cookie dough. But, once again - I think it's my 37th comment - this recipe calls for melting chocolate chips with BUTTER!! I am so afraid to do that ........ for the 37th time .......... is it possible to melt chips with butter? Isn't that supposed to be shortening?

Nancy, I just put my chocolate and butter in a pyrex measuring cup in the microwave and do it for a minute.   Stir and if not quite all melted another few seconds.  Usually a minute is all it takes.  I think it probably only works with real butter as the fake ones usually have water in them and that would not work.

Renee, ,now I want the recipe.  The others make it sound really good.  My cookie jar is empty at the moment.  I think my favorite chocolate cookie is one of the VBB ones.  Can't think of it at the moment, but it might be the Big Chocolate Cookie.  I like chocolate crinkles also.

Love chocolate chip cookies - using the recipe right off the Nestle Toll House bag!! Sometimes I use both regular chocolate chips and white chocolate chips!

I have the Sacher Torte cookies recipe in a1984 book that uses either  margarine or butter. It also uses margarine or butter melted with the chocolate chips.

One of my projects today is to make another batch of Sachertorte Cookies ..... one with the dark chocolate pudding I found and apricot preserves.  As soon as I get off the computer I'll bake the two batches of cookie dough that's waiting for me in the fridge.

The first recipe I looked at was from cooks.com. It's nearly identical to Renee's recipe, with the exception of adding almond extract, and more chocolate/butter drizzle.

Sacher Torte Cookies

Cooks.com

1 c. butter; softened

1 3.9 oz. pkg. instant pudding mix

1 egg

1 tsp. almond extract

2 c. flour

3 tbsp. sugar

1/2 c. apricot preserves

1 c. semisweet chocolate chips

6 tbsp. butter; melted

 Preheat oven to 325º.

Combine butter and pudding mix.  Cream together until fluffy. Beat in egg and almond extract. Gradually add flour, beating at low speed, until dough forms. Shape into 1-inch balls and roll in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake  for 15-18 minutes.

Imprint each cookie in center. Remove immediately. Cool. Fill cookies with preserves, 1/2 teaspoon in each. Blend chips and melted butter. Put ½  teaspoon chocolate on top.
