I found this recipe a while back and it has taken me this long to make it.  I think just by the smell I am sorry I waited and half way through making it it suddenly hit me that this is a Gluten Free cake.  Just use cocoa powder or sugar to dust the pan rather than flour.
I saw this made on the TV show The Chew a while back so the recipe is also there.

Julia Baker's German  Chocolate Soufflé Cake
For the cake:
12 ounces Dark Chocolate (62 to 68 % is called for)
2 Tb Cocoa powder
1 Stick unsalted butter
8 eggs, separate whites from yolks
1 Cup coconut oil
3/4 Cup sugar plus 1 Tb for egg whites
1 Cup coconut
1 Cup chopped pecans
For the coconut pecan custard:
1Cup sweetened flaked coconut
1 Cup chopped pecans
3 egg yolks
1 Cup evaporated milk
1 Cup sugar
1/2 Cup unsalted butter
1 tsp vanilla
For the garnish:
Powdered sugar
cocoa powder
Pre heat oven 300 degrees
Grease and flour 9 inch springform pan
For the custard:
In a sauce pan combine evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, butter and vanilla.  Cook stirring constantly until mixture is thick, about 12 minutes. Add coconut and pecans.  (I poured the custard through a strainer into the coconut and pecans to remove any egg that may have cooked..glad I did)
Set aside to cool.
For the cake:
In a bowl over a pan of very hot water melt the Chocolate, cocoa powder, butter and coconut oil.
In another bowl whip the sugar and egg yolks until they are thick and light yellow.
In another bowl whip egg whites to soft peak stage, add the tablespoon of sugar and whip to stiff peaks.
Fold 1/3  of the chocolate into the egg yolk mixture then 1/3 of the whites, more chocolate, more whites, finish with the whites, add coconut and pecans then fold in the coconut/pecan custard mixture.  Do not over mix.
Pour into pan.
Bake 40 to 45 minutes.
Remove from oven, cool to room temperature.

Garnish..
Dust with powdered sugar and cocoa powder.

Serve with Coconut Whipped Cream
Refrigerate a can of coconut milk 2 hours or overnight.
Whip until desired firmness, add a bit of powdered sugar for added sweetness if you want.
**I have not yet whipped the coconut milk so I am not sure of this yet, I never thought it would whip like cream would..****

If this cake tastes half as good as it smells or from the sample I had of the individual parts from the bowls I am in deep trouble! I will add a comment when I have tried it later this evening.

Nikki - Thank you for your recipe and for your review after you tasted it.  This is definitely in my "to bake" pile - I love almost anything and everything chocolate and this sounds fantastic.  Remember, as my Mom used to say - if it's homemade the calories don't count!

I made the coconut/pecan custard the day before so it cooled off and I had one less thing to do while I was making the cake.  Worked out great.  The cake actually came together pretty fast, I whipped the egg whites in the stand mixer while I was beating the yolks and sugar with a cheap hand mixer. I think it took all of 15 minutes to put together.

And now since I know that the calories don't count I wanna make another!

Another observation about this cake.
I had "to take one for the team" and try a leftover slice cold.....
Leftover cake tastes much better if you heat the slice up i the microwave for about 10-15 seconds.  It brings back the gooey to the cake.  And this cake is much better a bit gooey.
