Land O Lakes butter site just posted this ..... I found it especially good because I always try to use my microwave to soften butter.

Thanks for posting the tips Nancy.  I must admit I have tried softening butter in the microwave but it usually ended up all melted so now I just make sure I leave it out in time.  Have tried the cutting method and that works pretty well too.

In Response to Re: Softening butter for baking:
GRANA here; I used to take the butter out  of fridge at least an hour  hour before using it My new microwave oven has a " soften"   butter  cyle,I just  push it& the # of sticks(1 to 4) and the sticks of butter are perfectly softened for  creaming w/ sugar. This microwave oven was the least xpensive one on display that day( half the price our budget allowed. It  sure doesm make baking easier, no planning ahead needed!

What brand of microwave is it?  I will have to look for this when shopping for a new one when that comes up.
