If I forget to take the butter out I will either place it wrapped in a bowl of warm water along with the eggs that should also be at room temperature.  Or I will cut it into bits and place it in the mixing bowl. That usually warms it up pretty fast.

I'm one of those people who often "break the rules".  I put mine into the microwave, set it for 1 min., stop the microwave every two seconds to turn the stick of butter clockwise.  I feel the butter each time I stop the microwave to be sure I don't overmelt the butter.  I have it down to a science and it works very well for me.  Just sayin!

I, of course, never forget to bring the butter to room temp...LOL! And my tried and true way has been using the microwave, but I will give these suggestions a try. Thanks, Nancy, for sharing!

My current method is 7 second turns in the wave.   That usually works for me.
Bakery, I've never tried that.

I usually put mine in the bowl of the mixer and beat, and beat, and beat it until it has softened!

I put mine in the MW and usually watch it, doing a few seconds at a time.  However when I was making the cranberry almond cake, I put it in for 45 seconds and didn't watch it.  Oops, I had some melted butter on the tray.  I just scraped it off and used it.

Millie, you are just more organized than some of the rest of us.  Usually I'm ready to do my stuff and the butter is still in the fridge.

GRANA here;
I used to take the butter out  of fridge at least an hour  hour before using it
My new microwave oven has a "soften"  butter  cyle,I just  push it& the # of sticks(1 to 4) and the sticks of butter are perfectly softened for  creaming w/ sugar.This microwave oven was the least xpensive one on display that day( half the price our budget allowed.
It  sure doesm make baking easier, no planning ahead needed!Wink

What a smart microwave.  I'll have to look for that feature when I shop for a new one.  My current one is over 20 years old.  Still going!

I do something similar to what Bakery 1G does, I usually microwave for about 10 seconds and flip the butter onto its side and keep going. This usually softens the butter evenly. We always keep butter in the fridge or freezer, and I usually get the urge to bake out of the blue and am not patient enough to wait :')
