I'm pretty embarrassed to even ask this, but what does it mean when it says divided after an ingredient?

Thank you, everyone for such welcoming and encouraging advice! I never thought about getting all the ingredients measured out and putting things back away, so I don't goof. Which I'm sure will be especially handy advice after our little one is born in November Laughing

Hi  Heather - welcome to VBB. Mary Jo answered your question just fine but I'm going to add a bit.  When a recipe says "divided" it means you'll use part of an ingredient in one section of a recipe and part in another.  For example - if the recipe calls for 2 cups of chocolate morsels, divided,... just read on in the recipe to see what amount they want you to use where.  It will say something like, "melt 1 1/2 cups of morsels and add to batter".  Then it will ask you to use the remaining 1/2 cup morsels on the top of the batter. Did we make any sense?

Every now and then you'll find a recipe that doesn't say divided in the ingredients, but when you read through the recipe it will say what you are supposed to do with the particular ingredient.  That's why when I teach classes I always tell my students to read all the way through the recipe first.

Heather, can you handle one more comment? Baking is like building something: measure twice, cut once. The suggestions to read through the recipe and double check that you have all the ingredients are excellent, and come from those of us who have been baking and making mistakes for a long time!!!

Yes, we are expecting a son due November 17th!  I think my husband is so excited he's going to explode before I do Wink

I'm also searching around on this site to find easy/quick things to make for dinner after he's finally here. My husband is an amazing cook, so I'm not too worried. Since baking isn't his forte, I figured I'd try to pick up a little more of that since that's what I seem to be better at.

Thank you again for being one of hte women who have made me feel so welcomed!

Heather--- i have a recipe:

Quick And Easy Brownies:

3/4 stick butter
3 tbsp. cocoa
1 c. sugar
2 slightly beaten eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
3/4 c. flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Melt butter in 9x9 inch pan in preheated oven. Combine cocoa and sugar in medium mixing bowl. Add eggs, vanilla, flour, and melted butter. Pour into same 9x9 inch pan and bake 30 to 35 minutes. Cool, cut into 2 inch squares.

Heather here is an easy idea for you for fast easy dinner that can be made ahead and frozen.  Make lasagna.  In stead of making it in a regular pan layer the noodles in a bread loaf pan.  3 pans will do one regular lasagna.  The noodles fit perfectly in the loaf pan.  Line the loaf pan first with plastic wrap then layer all the ingredients and fold over the plastic to seal it well.  Toss into the freezer, pan and all.  In a few hours when all is frozen remove the frozen lasagna from the pan and wrap in foil and place back in the freezer.  When you want to make a lasagna un wrap place back in the bread pan and bake.  This size is perfect for 2 people.

If you make soup, stew or chili in advance freeze in heavy zip top bags and lay them flat in the freezer.  They take up much less room flat than many of the plastic storage containers.  Because they are fairly thin they thaw pretty fast.
If you do soup with noodles omit the noodles and make them when you are heating the soup.  Doing it that way lets you change to a different size noodle to rice or barley just to make it different.

Welcome Heather to VBB and congrats on having a little baby boy!  I wish the best to you and your husband and a "Howdy" to you little baby boy!  How wonderful!

I make a big pan of home-made Mac & Chse. for dinner and I freeze the rest in a microwave dish.  It always thaws perfect, pop it in the microwave and it tastes great!  I do have the recipe for that if you wish to have it!

I also make a pan of Peanut Butter Tandy Cake, cut it up in squares, put it in a freezer container and freeze it.  When I want to get a few bars out, open the container, grab what I want and thaw in the refrig., dessert is ready & tastes yummy.  I do have the recipe for the PB Tandy Cake if you would like it!

I also freeze soups, lasagna, stuff shells, chili, stews but I use the stackable freezer containers.  I am always afraid of leakage.  

I hope my few suggestions help you, again welcome to VBB!

Heather R.: I like to make "foil dinners". They can be prepared ahead of time, refrigerated, and then either put on the bbq or in the oven to bake. A lot of the recipes are complete meals, with meat, rice or potatoes, and vegies. There are quite a few recipes on the Betty Crocker site:

Tastykake?  Nope,  I've never even heard of Tastykake.    Wink  Such a funny name I'm not certain I WANT to hear about it. Wink

A wonderful group of young singers and, of course, their sponsors is coming to visit my church Sunday.  A great family is having them all for lunch after church and I've been asked to supply dessert.   Cookies (lol) are expected so these great kids can load up with them to take on their traveling.   I'm thinking about sending lots of cookies for traveling but maybe a special dessert for the meal.

Here is the recipe!  Tastykake is a company that makes snack cakes and pies.  Very popular around here.  Well, they make a PB Tandy Cakes that are wonderful, #1 seller for them.  Well, this cake tastes just like that! 

PB TASTY KAKES

2 CUPS FLOUR
DASH OF SALT
1 CUP MILK
4 EGGS
 2 CUPS SUGAR
1 3/4 CUPS PEANUT BUTTER
1 TSP. VANILLA
2 TBSP. OIL
8 OZ. CHOC. BAR OR 1- 12 OZ. CHOC. CHIPS (MILK)

CREAM EGGS, MILK, SUGAR,OIL, FLOUR, SALT AND VANILLA.  BEAT WELL.  POUR IN A GREASED AND FLOURED 13 X 9 PAN.

BAKE AT 350* FOR 25 MINUTES.  WHILE CAKE IS STILL HOT, SPREAD THE PEANUT BUTTER AND ALLOW TO COOL IN REFRIGERATOR.  MELT CHOC. AND SPREAD ON COOLED CAKE.
