Hi Everyone, It's been quite awhile since I was last on so pray all is well with you. Do any of you great VBBers out there have a recipe for homemade Sandwich Spread like the kind sold in grocery stores?

I have never heard of making this yourself.  It seems like it is mostly mayo for a base, then they add pickles/relish.  I am not that crazy about it, but my Dad loves it.

Thousand Island dressing is similar just thinner in consistency,maybe add a little mayo.I would think that it is made with mayo,ketchup and sweet pickle relish,I have used this on Rubins when I'm out of Thousand Island.

Depending on the sandwich I make a spread that works for the sandwich.
For some I do the mayo a bit of sour cream or Greek style yogurt and relish.  I use that on lots of different sandwiches.
I like making a ham spread, Toss in a blender or processor ham, pickles a bit of mustard and a bit of mayo.  It is sort of like a Deviled Ham spread.
For beef sandwiches I make a mayo/sour cream and horseradish spread. If it is just for me I use quite a bit of horseradish.

OK,I went looking around again and found a copy cat recipe for sandwich spread,I think this might be the one you are looking for: 16oz. miracle whip, 8 oz. sweet pickle relish squeeze out most of the moisture,strain it.so it won't make the spread runny,just enough ketchup to make it pink in color.Refrigerate.I haven't made this myself but I think it will be similar.But like Nikki said they are many dressings for sandwiches,ones that go good with a particular sandwiches.My husband used to use this type of spread on balogna sandwiches.

The one I have eaten (for over 60 years)  uses bologna, sweet pickles & Miracle Whip.  I made a small batch last month, I used 1# bologna & 2 pickles (put through nut grinder, salad shooter or what ever you use to grate cabbage or cheese) & add enough Miracle Whip to make it spreadable like tuna salad. You can use sweet relish instead.

I just realized that you might not mean the sandwich spread sold at the deli & mean the spread in a jar that is used instead of Miracle Whip.  Which one did you mean?

I made the sandwich spread but I only made half a recipe and I must say very similar to what I remember I use to buy this when we were first married we liked it on bologna sandwiches. 1 cup of miracle whip,1/2 cup of sweet pickle relish drained well I used my small metal strainer and pressed it well.Just enough ketchup to make it pink.Store in refrigerator.I looked in my store and they don't carry it any longer.

Like Mary L., I don't make sandwich spread .... never use it.   
I do remember being a child and having it made from Miracle Whip and pickle relish.

I remember my parents making a sandwich spread that was made of balogne, a little bit of onion, sweet pickles and mayo.  The onion and pickles along with the balogne were put through a food grinder.  Now, of course, we have food processors.  I remember this being a very tasty sandwich.

After Easter I posted a sandwich recipe for Ham salad that was so good,it was ground ham,mayo,sweet pickle relish,chopped onion ,celery and a little mustard.it was just like the ham salad that I used to purchase in the deli at the store where I worked.I'm sure this would be equally good useing ground balogna.If anyone wants this recipe I will post it again.
