Do you have a good tool/method/idea for grating lemon or lime peel?
One of my favorite treats is a lime cookie but grating the lime peel (and getting the necessary juice) is so difficult and time consuming that I don't enjoy making them.

How do you get the juice that recipes call for? I use one of those ancient glass containers with a shaped lid to TRY to get juice.

Nancy, I use a microplane to zest my lime, lemon, and orange. It is
fast and easy. I got mine at the San Diego County Fair. I zest first
then take the half of the fruit and place over my electric juicer.
I don't even know if they have these juicer's anymore. I got mine
in the early 90's from Walmart. It looks like one of those hand ones
but it is electric. I know it was under $10.00. My microplane was
approx. $12.00. I have a long one. I love my microplane. When I go
to the fair, I am always looking for new kitchen gadgets. lol

Carol - I don't even know what a "microplane" grater (tiny itzy bitzy gratings?) is ........ and I've never seen an electric juicer. I search around the 'net and see what I can find.

The last time I was at a fair they were showing off gasoline motors

I do the same thing. The Microplane zester is the best invention in a long time. I got mine at Bed Bath & Beyond.

nancy, look at the one with the yellow handle 12.99 for citrus

yo probably can find a cheap heel grater (for feet) at the dollar store or walmart-------that would work too

or just look on the gadget aisle at walmart the ones i see used are like the one with the yellow handle
just a kind of file

I usually just use the standard grater when I need lemon or lime. Still have one "old-fashioned" flat one and the newer one that stands up. Squeezing out the juice is a pain and almost impossible to do when my carpal acts up lol.

Hi Nancy I use the old fashion reamer made of glass for juicing.before you do anything place whatever citrus fruit you are wanting to juice and zap in the microwave for 10 seconds and then place it on the counter and roll it with the palm of your hand back and forth this will then yield a larger amount of juice.if you are zesting do this before juicing.Here is what I use for zesting and juicing

   This is the type juicer that I use .


                                        This is the type citrus zester that I use it goes just deep enough so you don't get any of the white part of the peel which is bitter.

Nancy, I would try to google microplane and see what comes up.
I like my big one. I have another one that you use to grate soft
cheese, chocolate, onion, garlic and butter. I paid $10 for that one.

Hi Nancy.The reason I mentioned the type zester I use was in a previous post it seemed you didn't want to spend a great deal of moneyThis type of zester does zest pretty quickly It peels the citrus choice of fruit in long thin strips.I also have a handheld cheese grater I some times use for zesting.The directions I gave on how to juice will deliver a greater amount of juice with ease.You can do a search for the different tools on line and look at reveiws this may help you decide before buying anything.I used to have an old fashioned orange juicer were you placed half an orange then pushed down on a crank and it sqeezed out every bit.I didn't use it often enough and it was taking up space so I went back to the old glass zester which I store in a drawer.Take your time and have fun shopping.

I have 2 microplanes one that is fine and another that is a bit coarser. Love them for zesting as well as for cheese and chocolate.
Nancy if you are not sure about the microplane look for one of the hand held cheese graters they are not as fine as a microplane but you have pretty good control for what you are doing. I am not talking about the type that you put the cheese into and turn a handle the one I am talking about has a handle and the grater is attached.

A microplane zester is a great tool for grating lemon or lime zest. Also putting a lemon or lime in the microwave for 10- 15 seconds, cut in half and squeeze out the juice - seems to get you more juice. Or you can use a glass or plastic juicer after micowaving.
