How do you make French toast?  What is your recipe?
I have looked at a dozen recipes but none seemed perfect.
Tonight my dinner was my usual, old recipe of beaten eggs, a splash
of milk, a bit of vanilla and salt.  It was edible but not great.
I would love to hear your recipes.

Hi Sue! My recipe is similar to the one you made, and my family loves it:
   2 eggs, 1/4 c. milk, 1 tbsp. sugar, 1 tbsp. vanilla, 1 tsp. cinnamon
I also like to add a bit of butter to the skillet before cooking the french toast, to give it a little crustiness.

Can  be  prepared earlier and baked in the oven.

I don't really have a "recipe" per se.  I beat some eggs with a splash of milk, some pepper and a dash of nutmeg.  I also run some Crisco over my griddle before I cook each piece.  Oh and I use either Texas Toast or Challah bread.  I'm also the weirdo who uses butter and salt instead of syrup on her French toast.  After all who puts syrup on toasted bread right? LOL

Thank you, Verlee.  I was starting to think this site was the home base for the very active members and I, a newbie, would be ignored and never get an answer.
Maxine, I was asking for a recipe ;) .  I can't imagine using leftover French toast.  But thanks for a response.

Hi Sue,welcome to VBB.My recipe is like Verlee's but I do something a little different sometimes not always.I make stuffed french toast with peanut butter and jelly.Make it like you would a peanut butter and jelly sandwich then dip it into your egg mixture and just brown on both sides.When you cut into it the melted peanu tbutter and jelly will ooze out.No need for syrup,but if you must go ahead.I found this in an old recipe book I made it for the boys when they were little and they still love it.

This past Christmas I made french toast but instead of milk I used egg nog.  Turned out great and even my husband, who doesn't really like french toast, said it was good.

I keep seeing a picture of stuffed french toast on-line and may try that next time.  Since I love peanut butter maybe I should make Gale's recipe first lol.  Thanks for sharing that Gale, it sounds marvelous.

GRANA here;
  Hi SUE S;
I usually  soak slices of whole grain bread in n vanilla flavored egg 7  milk mixture overnight&  fry the slices the next  morning in a skillet of melted butter till golden on both sides.
A scoutleader from the south added molasses to her eggs   & got t a brown sugar/ caramel like French toast; very  good  &
just a little bit different Smile

GRANA here;
  A nearby 50's style diner  makes s French toast filled w / sliced ham & cheese , dipped in  an egg mixture;fried as usual sprinkled w/ confectioner's sugar; They call it A MONTE CHRISTO" SANDWHICH , which may be topped w/  hot maple syrup; a "BIT TOO MUCH" for me but our son enjoys it on his visits here.

I will chime in on this, better late than never...
I think the type of bread you start with is almost as important as the egg mixture you dip the bread into.
I like a good "sturdy" bread, it just can't be a soft white bread or it becomes mushy.
Vanilla, a bit of nutmeg, a bit of sugar.  I have also used egg nog and loved the results. (picked up a gallon of egg nog after Christmas for about $1.00 so I was making all sorts of stuff with egg nog. )

Sue:  My recipe is very similar to Verlee's.  Sometimes I make it with one of the flavored breakfast breads from Pepperidge Farms, such as the Cinnamin, Pumpkin, etc.  Very good that way.

Welcome aboard.  Hope you like it here.
