Freezing cookie dough?

Learn the baker basics

Curious if anyone has experience in mixing toll house original recipe cookie dough, and then freezing it for future baking.  Thanks!

I would think it would work fine. Charitable organizations sell cookie dough that is frozen so I'm sure it bakes up just fine.

I bake all the dough and then freeze the cookies but I'm certain freezing first would work very well.

I have done it often. No problem. Just recently I had extra egg yolks, so I made some spritz cookie dough. It turned out just fine when I went to bake it later. Toll House Cookie dough is the same way. Just be careful to either thaw it out completely or watch it carefully in the oven if it is frozen as it may take longer to bake.

Hi RON R, GRANA here;I make myown RTB(R eady ToBake)
cookie dough out of whatever recipe I'm using. I shape balls( right size for the cookie type & IQF them(Indziptop baI I I ndividually Q uick Freeze them on a tray to keep them separate; seal them in a zip top bag; label w/ type date made &use by date( w/in 2 months)I then prior to baking; either thaw in the refrigerator overnight & then bake as usual OR I bake them from frozen & add two extra minutes.Watch the edges for too early or delayed browning

To make it even easier measure out the cookie dough in scoops.
Giant cookies measure out 1/4 Cup, smaller ones measure out 2 Tb portions.
Freeze the scoops then toss them in a zip top bag and freeze. When you want to make 1 or 2 or more cookies just take out a portion or two and bake.
You could also freeze in a square, like a 9X9 pan, deeply score and freeze. Remove from the pan and put in a zip top bag. When you want to bake a batch just break along the score lines and bake. (Line pan with parchment to make removal of the frozen brick of dough possible)

With any of these make sure you identify type of cookie and baking instructions.
Many cookie dough recipes state that the dough should be refrigerated before baking and this extra time allows the dough to cool, the fat to solidify and the flour to absorb moisture. This can be done just as easily in the freezer.

"RULE of THUMB":to bake frozen dough; add about 2 minutes( if stillfrozen) to he rgular baking time( watch edges/ bottoms for color as directed..I make my own RTB cookie dough; all the time )
*****Also be sure to use up frozen dough w/in 2 months of freezing; ( mark your cllendar & the pkg of cookie dough.****

also if you don't have a scoop--------------you can just roll it into a log in waxed paper------------ like the commercial ones ----------when ready to bake some -----------just slice pieces off the frozen log to bake and return the frozen log to freezer----------------much easier to cut evenly than the refrigerated logs-we always bake them without thawing

in fact we use several recipes that require freezing--------------refrigerator pecan cookies--------and chocolate pin wheels ---------for instance-------- and we just freeze them in the waxed paper, although you could wrap that in foil or put in a freexer bag if you prefer

like nikki, if i make chocolate chip i use a scoop and freeze on a cookie sheet until frozen and then into a bag

YOU SHOULD NEVER REFREEZE ANY DOUGH THAT HAS BEEN THAWED-------YOU MUST COOK IT AND THEN FREEZE THE COOKIES IF YOU NEED TO!!!

I freeze my cookie dough all the time, I let it thaw before baking though! Turns out just as delcious! :)

I usually make logs of cookie dough to freeze too. You can make the logs any size you want so there won't be any waste. Great timesaver when you need to bake cookies in a hurry.
