Yes you can use food coloring and just add it to your recipe.  I have found that paste colors are more intense than the liquid that you find at the store.  Look in full line craft stores for the paste colors.  There are also powder colors that also give a much nicer color and both the paste and powder colors come in a much wider selection of colors.
If you want a very intense color the liquid that you buy at the store might add more liquid to the frosting than you want so adjust if you need to.

By the way are you talking about a frosting that is what we usually think of as a butter cream or are you talking about a French or Italian Buttercream?  What we call a butter cream is just butter or shortening and powdered sugar the French or Italian call for heated sugar syrup, egg whites and butter.  If you are making the French or Italian I would use the paste or powder not the liquid.

By the way welcome to this site I am sure you will get lots of help!

Hi Michal ~  Welcome to VBB.  Ask any and all the baking questions you want and we'll try to answer them.
Nikki is one of our "experts" and we all listen to her.   As usual - I agree with what she says ........ feel free to use color.
Just add a bit at a time to a recipe so you don't get too much.

Welcome Michal! Please return often, and share recipes with us. Most of us have too many recipes and not enough time to make everything! But we do enjoy hearing from others.
