A while ago I was watching an episode of Americas Test Kitchen and they were making pie crust.
One of the things that was mentioned to make it easier to make is to use ice water that some vodka had been added to . In this way you could almost double the amount of water in the dough making it much easier to work with because the alcohol will evaporate and the crust will be flaky and tender.
I tried it using the Lemoncello in the Shaker Lemon Pie. I have to say it was the best pie crust I have ever made. Since then I have just made crusts using an alcohol as part of the liquid.

We don't drink at our house. I have a bottle each of red and white wine to use in recipes and a really old bottle with some rum left that I had used in recipes also.
If I'm at some sort of function and there's wine, I may have a glass of white Wine glasses are fun to drink from with the fancy stem.
At home we are big tea drinkers.

Since they only used vodka on the show they did say that you will not taste it. I did notice a lemon flavor in the crust, verymild but that may have had more to do with the bit of zest I put in the crust as well. I did make a crust for a Chocolate pie using a bit of amaretto and did not notice an almond flavor.
Flavor or not I think using the alcohol lets you use more liquid making it easier to make a crust. It is the only way I will make one now. But even if you use all alcohol, no matter the flavor, it is 5 or 6 tablespoons plus the bit of water from the ice, not much in a crust given the quantity of dough made and spread out over an 8 or 9 inch area. Most pies are pretty flavorful and if you use vodka or "match" the alcohol to the pie it will taste great. Lemoncello with a lemon or blueberry pie, amaretto with a cherry, cranberry or apple pie..the ideas are endless. (Although I am not going to stock a pantry with booze just to make pies!)

Hi GALE G ; GRANA here; I was never much of a drinker & now am not allowedto drink more than a sip of wine( due to medications & health isues.When I could drink,I liked mai tais, a brandy Alexander, compari & soda, whiteor redine (Sebastiani 1968 propritor's reserve merlot wine either at social gatheringgs& formal functions. For every day , Iliked 7UP; root beer, orange crush but can no longer handle bubbles except for asti spumonte champagne or Rose Mateus[NewYear's Eve]tiny sips only); Now I drink hot tea or water; noice w/ lemon or lime squeezed into it. Since I never drank to get tipsy ; I don't miss it ; other than the flavor of a really good red or white wine w/ a "special"meal. Mydr allowed a sip"JUST A SIP" ofwine on our 45thanniversry.The server suggested a lovely chardonayv.Huby&I shared a glass& therestaurant "comped" us thewine ine, even though they had to open a new bottle foroursingleglass; whichhubby was wilingo pay the $7 for l have become a connoseur(sp) of water & have learned which states, cities& towns have tastey water, and more imporantly , which do not:Widdbey Island, Wahington(not) & Philadelphia, Pa.(not); Merrimack,NH ( good) Way off the subject; I still do enjoy a small sip of whatever at dinners w/ others & rarely find a drinkI want more( than sip) of ; fortunately for me.

Gale, like you I am not supposed to drink alcoholic beverages because of some of the medications that I take. No alcohol for. I never cared much for it anyway. So, my "poisons" are regular sodas, tea, and chocolate, not necessarily in that order.

Due to all the medications I take, I rarely drink alcohol. On big occasions I might have 1 glass of Champagne. Also when we go to Hawaii, I treat myself to a Pina Colada, but that is about all. We used to drink wine occasionally, but I pass on that now.

I've enjoyed a glass of wine this evening that my brother made.It's sweet and not dry at all.He made it out of green tea and rice this type of wine takes some time to ferment.But not to be fooled this wine can sneak up on you lol lol lol !!! He is going to teach me how to make it and another type of spiced wine he makes which is also very good.My Dr.even said a glass of wine every night wouldn't hurt me.
