In our family it is tradition to eat some kind of Pork,this is an Eastern European tradition.It is believed to bring you good luck and prosperity in the New Year ,because the pig always roots forward

In our family it is tradition to eat some kind of Pork,this is an Eastern European tradition.It is believed to bring you good luck and prosperity in the New Year ,because the pig always roots forward with his snout, cabbage is shred into to long stands which signifies long life and the green cabbage signifies prosperity.We will be having smoked Hungarian sausage and homemade sauerkraut,breaded pork chops,mashed potatoes and gravy,green beans,cucumber salad and Dobos Torte for desert served with hot coffee.

New Years day we make homemade lasagna, bread and salad.  We watch the parades and pray my husbands pager doesn't go off!!

If we all ate everything that was supposed to bring us luck, long life, prosperity,and everything else we would never leave the table, or we would have to start at midnight in one time zone and eat around the clock.
Pork, cabbage, black eyed peas, herring or some type of fish on and on....I think anyone lucky enough to have food on the table, a roof over their head and friends and family to share it all with is already blessed with luck and prosperity, the long life who is to determine what long life means?  100 years ago the lifespan is not what it is today by any means whose to tell that the next 100 years will bring.  We can just lead the life we have to the best of our ability and share what we have with others.
Ok down off my soap box.
I wish all my friends here a Healthy and Happy New Year.  And we do share with each other and I thank you for that.
Wow did I get off track!
I think maybe Gumbo.  Possibly Dirty Rice.  But it will be one or the other.

What you said is so true! 

The economy is very bad, so many people without jobs and jobs are hard to find.  It will be a rough Christmas for many and I hope and pray everything turns around this upcoming year.

So far, I will be making Pork, Sauerkraut and a 7 layered salad.  I would like to make 1 or 2 more dishes but not sure yet as to what.  I also got to figure out what to make for dessert!   But it is a PA Dutch tradition to have Pork and Sauerkraut so we have good luck in the New Year!

We will have pork and turkey.  Of course we will have green beans as that is my daughter's favorite vegetable.

What you wrote sounds just like my family.  Didn't have much, worked hard for what they had and shared what they had.  You know, being brought up like that, makes you appreciate everything you have more so, you just didn't take things for granted!  But what we did have the most was LOVE!  I wish you and your family a healthy and Happy New Year!

Hi Susan,that is so true it does make you realize the important things like love,if it is true love that will last a whole lot longer than money.I recieved a very special gift from my son for Christmas this year,nothing material but what he told me.He said Mom I must be growing up this is the first time I have thought about everyone else and giving to them and not caring if I was given anything in return,It felt good to give.My eyes filled with tears and I told him now you're getting what it is all about.

We usually save our ham hock from our Christmas ham and make black eyed pea and ham soup with corn bread.  We have in the past shared New Years dinner with friends that have other traditions.  Making it a "pot-luck" type of celebration with dinner and desserts from different cultures.  I really enjoy sharing our tradtions.  Thank you!

Thank you Susan and Nancy,That was truly the most wonderful gift I could ever recieve from him.He always would say to me why do you always do things for others when they don't do for you?I always told him because it is the right thing to do and it makes me feel good to do it.When you are kind to others,it will come back to you when you need it most.I had a heart attack fourteen years ago and bypass surgery,he was only seven at the time,my only thought was I have to be here for him.I asked God to please allow me that time with him to finish raising him until he was eighteen,he just turned twenty one and I feel that I'm very blessed.

Hi Cindy that is so nice you get to share others traditions and food, that makes it interesting.My brother in law is Japanese,so that always made it interesting going to his familys home for their New Years celebration,His Mom would always have an Open House every year and I had the oppoutunity to sample many delicious Japanese dishes.

 We have stuffed cabbage with pork and saurkraut also mashed potatoes and corn..... I have been making this for over 20 years I have my hubby's family over for dinner.... he is hungarian and tought me how to make the cabbage the way his Mom did.....
