According to the FDA, you should wash all produce under running water before you cut, cook or eat it -- regardless of if you buy it at the supermarket, farmers market or grow it in your own backyard. The www.fda.gov/food/resourcesforyou/consumers/ucm114299" target="_hplink" rel="nofollow">FDA doesn't recommend using vegetable wash, and suggests that you always wash your produce before cooking or eating, regardless if you plan to peel it or not. Unwashed FRESH PRODUCE may harbor unhealthy chemical residue& insect particles.
If it has a rind or peel I wash/rinse it under the faucet.Something like leaf lettuce I tear apart into individual leaves in a sink full of water. Each leaf is washed.I try to remember to wash the lid of a can before opening but often forget.Raw meat is rinsed before I cook it. (not hamburger- lol)I could be a lot better at this.
