What I was wondering if anyone here has a great recipe for a veggie burger.I love big Portabella Mushroom caps under the broiler seasoned and eaten on a bun like a burger.Any ideas would be appreciated.Thanks.I will post recipes for the ones I have if I feel they are worth posting after making and trying them.

Hi GALE G;
 GRANA  here;
 Hubby &I have for  25 years ( for he ame reasons as you  ); lack of  enjoyment of red meat & in an efort to save money) switched to meatless foods wherever possible.
We both like(BIG) Boca burgers ; really big & lookk like a1/4 pounder.
They cook/ heat up  up quickly inthemicrowaveoven , easy cleanup too.I served them to  our son who thought they were beef burgers.He was surprised that I served him a beef  burger  after I had told him thatwe no longer  ate red eat.His ( 8yo)daughter really liked her 1/4# burger w/cheese.
They (BIG BOCAS) areno longrr vailablein ourareaer availablearound ound here but I keep looking.The mf. told me that another supermarket chain  in town sells themem. Since the wholesale club store no longer does, I may haveto go to  the other side of townto get  some for us to enjoy.I used to make my own veggie burgerss:  using  black beans,brown rice& lentils, they were good but not as good as theBIG Bocas& the veggie burgers  were very time connsuming to prepare
.
There are several other veggie burgers available, frozen.They are thinner& less meatlike.; overcook easiy& turn to cardboard.Frowni love grilled portobelo mushrooom  caps but do not think they taste like burgersThere are some meatles burger dry mixes( just add water, shape& fry) in specialty stores& some grocery stores:
 Nature burger,  Fantastic  Foods,or in"Health food stores"
good luck in your search for vbeggie burgers; they're out  there , somewhere

  The store bought meatless burgers are so expensive,that's why I want to make my own.Plus homemade is always better,I hope.Laughing

We like veggie burgers.  i get Boca or Morningstar, whichever is on sale and I have coupons.  I won't pay regular price because they can be expensive.  I got Morningstar a  couple weeks ago for $1.99 (4 in a package) and I had a coupon for $1 off.
They have several "flavors" and they are all good.  I've never had one turn to "cardboard" but I watch how long I cook them.  I always use English muffins for the bun as it is more substantial than a regular hamburger bun.  The spicy black bean is really good.
I've never seen the Big Boca, but the regular size is big enough for us.
I've seen recipes for making my own, but haven't tried any yet.

Sorry Gale, I've never tried veggie burgers.  My daughter has tried them and wasn't too thrilled with them.  I've taken to making burgers with half lean ground turkey and half ground pork.  They cook up really nice and don't have all the fat of ground beef.  Of course my carnivore husband still prefers beef lol.  But then he's not too fond of too much fish either.

The kids came for dinner tonight so we had brats again,so good.I love the Morning star meatless products but they are so very expensive.Hubby says he's easy to please but,that's not so! lol lol lol .My younger boy and I like pretty much everything.He wanted to start eating more healthy and I'm all for that.I bought ground turkey awhile back,20# so I've been sneaking it into everything but if hubby knew he wouldn't eat it.

I think my favorite of the veggie burgers is the Boca Spicy Chicken.  I did try  a sample of a Black Bean Burger that Costco is selling.  I thought it was pretty good and if my freezer was not so full I would get some I think that would be a better option for us calorie wise.
Also Costco has a veggie burger made from spinach and chickpeas.  That was good but a bit more garlic than I like if I am going to be talking to people the next day.
I am sure there are recipes for making your own veggie burgers at All Recipes. Probably a better option, fresher and I can adjust seasonings.

I made up my own version of veggie burgers.Baby Bella mushrooms(portabella).onions,red,green and yellow peppers,black beans,shredded carrots,garlic,soy sauce and rolled oats.Just experimenting.I'll let you know how they come out.I put the mushrooms,onions,peppers and garlic in the food processor.then sauted in a little canola oil,added the carrots,soy sauce.Drained and rinsed the black beans and smashed with a fork.added to the sauted veggies then added the rolled oats to tighten it up a little.I made 4 patties and they are in the fridge getting cold.not sure if I'll broil or fry them.They smell good.If they aren't solid enough I'll add a little soy flour.

Quite often the other veggie burgers are sort of bland, just something to go between the halves of the bun and a platform for whatever else is going on them.  At that point save the calories and put the "stuff" on the bun and eat.
I think I will check out a few recipes and try them.  My husband likes burgers but I am trying to cut back on the ground beef.
