Help! I am making these cookies and they are coming out spread all over the pan. I microwaved the butter only to the point of soft not runny. What can I do with the rest of the dough. I have had this

Help! I am making these cookies and they are coming out spread all over the pan. I microwaved the butter only to the point of soft not runny. What can I do with the rest of the dough. I have had this happen before. Thanks, Frusterated

Pamela -- there are so many, so different suggestions. 
I always just add more flour than the recipe calls for .... just use heaping measuring cups.  And I always put the dough, rolled into a long log, on a sheet of plastic wrap and put it in the 'fridge several hours or over night ... until it's cold and very stiff.
This works for me.
