This is so funny.  On the way home from a Doctor's appointment today I said to my husband that I want to get some Rhubarb to plant.  I have plenty of sunshine and I think it will do well.
So I add Rhubarb to the list of things to get next time I am at the "Big Box Store" that sells all the garden plants.
Rhubarb, Rosemary, Basil, Thyme are a few that I am going to look for.  I think I may break my promise to myself that I will not plant much this year.  I want to put in another tree.  If anyone has any suggestions for a good tree for zone 5 I am up for any suggestions.

Yes Nancy, I will email you the recipe that I use. My husband and father both say it's the BEST strawberry rhubarb pie they have ever tasted!  That's saying something too!  They are both pie connoisseurs!

Rhubarb is one of those veggies that either one loves or doesn't.  I like it raw dipped in sugar. Hubby likes it raw, salted as well as sweetened in pies, bread, coffee cake etc.  The leaves are poisonous to animals so they don't bother it in the garden.

Yes, I grow rhubarb.  It's harder to grow here in south eastern NC than it was in NY but some how I get enough stalks to bake a few pies and loaves of bread and coffee cake and make some perserves for my hubby.

I have a very fuzzy memory of rhubarb (boy, that's hard to spell!)  growing below some fantastic lilacs* back on the farm.  Mom and grandma fought bitterly about it being allowed to grow or not.
*below lilacs ..... it that possible?

Rhubarb does like cooler spots so under lilac's could very well have been the case!

Yes, Renee, please, please, please post your recipe for us. ;-)) The favorite pie of my son who's in the Navy is Strawberry Rhubarb! In fact, I just made one for him for Easter. I like my recipe, but I feel it can be improved upon. So I'd love to compare it with your recipe.

We also had Rhubarb on the farm in Iowa when I was growing up. It seemed to grow like a weed and could take over our garden if we didn't keep it contained!!

And the scent of those lilacs...I do miss that. California has a version of lilac but it's no where near as fragrant as those in the Midwest, which get the cold winters that lilacs love. About 3 years ago I was visiting my sister in Illinois, and she took me to a Lilac shangri-la. There were probably over 100 varieties of lilacs, and oh that scent...heaven on earth.

I was also going to ask you to post the recipe as well.
I did find some Rhubarb yesterday but I was on my way to a meeting and I did not want it to sit in the hot car so I am hoping it will be there when I return later today.  I thought the price a bit much, small pot of rhubarb, 3 leaves a pot and they are asking $3.49 for them. But that was the same price as the Basil, rosemary, and thyme.  I did not see any sage and I would like some of that as well.

My Grandma used to make a "stewed" rhubarb.  Just cut it up and cooked it down with a bit of water and sugar.  I could eat bowls of it.  (sort of kept me regular
Surprised)

Nikki, I hope you have an easier time finding rhubarb that I have.  Nobody seems to have it.  We grew it in Maine easily, but here in MO it has a harder time.  Too hot I guess.  I'm trying again.  i bought some seeds and have one decent looking plant.  Of course now it is small but hopefully it will survive and eventually I'll be able to get a harvest.  I love rhubarb pie as long as there isn't too much sugar in it.

I did have luck finding it at a church plant sale.  Sort of a fund raiser for the church people dig plants out of their garden and sell them.  Got 2 for $3.00 each. Not much less than the Big Box Store is selling them for but I figure the church can use the money more than Home Depot or Lowes.
