Does anyone remember the caps that you could use to store evaporated milk, my mother had one. I remember it being blue and it had spikes in it so you could puncture the can and then use it to cover. If anyone knows what I'm talking about please post

I Hi JOYCE S; GRANA here;YES, I remember those but cannot ind them anywhere.Instead, I use a pointy end bottle opener & seal the can w/ a plastic pet food cover(for the flat cans)..works just fine & thebest/only option these day; hope this helps?????

I don't recall specialized covers for evaporated milk cans. My Mom just used those plastic covers that had elastic in them - one size fits all.

Look in the pet food aisle. They have the caps for animal food cans and they will also fit the evaporated milk can. I use the can opener that removes the top in one piece and just replace it and store in refrigerator.

I open the cans and then use the plastic lids that come on Hershey
chocolate syrup cans. My grandchildren use it in milk. They fit
perfect.

If I have some left after opening, I pour the remainder into a glass jar. That way I can see how much is left and hopefully remember to use it before itt grows green fuzz.

I rarely have evap. milk left, but if I do I put the can into a sandwich bag with the date that I opened it written on the bag.

I remember that about 55 yr. ago, when my mother visited friends, I would see the can of milk on the table along with the sugar, salt & pepper; until I got older I thought the cans of milk did not have to be in the frig. (the milk would be out on the table for hours), and it was only used in coffee.

I've seen plastic round caps to put over and open can - especially fo pet food. Never saw one with a spike on it to open a can. Perhaps a double thickness of heavy duty foil would work to cover the open can.

I use just a bit of that stuff in one of my Nestles candies and I HATE that. The rest of the can always goes to waste even if I dump it all into a Rubbermaid container .... it just sets in the 'fridge too long.

Once you open the can it can only be stored in the fridge for no longer than seven days.Condensed milk does not freeze well.Use the left overs in potatoes or a casserole using milk.

I know exactly what you are talking about. It was a stainless steel cap with two round puncture points on opposing sides. It punctured the can and then served as the lid. I have been looking for this for months. I checked Crate and Barrel, William Sonoma, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Walmart, Target. Next I will call the Carnation company, (unless someone in this forum has an answer).
