We were talking about recipes and I realized that the bread and butter pickle recipe makes me think of my mom. But the recipe if from my grandmother her mother in law. My other grandmother always made jello cake and german potato salad reminds me of a favorite aunt. My grandmother always let us use her kitchen and supplies growing up to experiment! I miss her soooo much! What memories do your recipes bring back?

The very first cookies I ever made ... I was a freshman in high school and in Home EC class (a requirement for all females and forbidden for males) we made Snickerdoodles.  I'll never forget that thrill.

From what I remember I was about 4 years old,Mom would bake bread just about everyday and other bakery as well. When ever I bake bread I think of her.I always got to make my own little braided bread sprinkled with sesame or poppy seeds.I got to make my own little pie in a custard cup.Whatever she baked I was allowed to make a miniature.Honestly I think of her and my Dad every single day.I'm very blessed to have had two wonderful parents like them.

My Mom gave me so many wonderful memories, I truly don't have a favorite, they all are so precious to me!  Everything my Mom did just had so much love in it.  She would do without so we could have some nice things.  But my Mom loved her baking and that is where I get it from!

I was blessed to have such a wonderful Mom!

There are so many wonderful memories of cooking and baking with my sons when they were little.  Even now, on holidays, since my husband can't do anything to help, they help me with the cooking and do all the cleaning and putting away of everything.  The memories just continue for me and for them.

My mom died when I was very young so I do not have a lot of memories with her.  My dad died a few years later.  My Grandmother lived with us for a while so the memories I have is of both of them cooking things.  My dad was a good cook as well.  The saddest thing is I would love to have the recipes for the things I do remember well, my dad's spaghetti sauce, his beef barley soup and cold slaw.  My mom's coffee cake and my mom and grandma would do something magic to a pan of stuffing.  I have yet to figure out how they did what they did.  We always had stuffing in the turkey and a pan of stuffing that was pretty dry so when you poured gravy on it the gravy would be soaked into the stuffing.  I can make dry stuffing but it does not turn out like the one I recall.
This is one of the reasons I encourage everyone to write down family recipes they will be lost if not written down.

I just returned from a vacation to the Midwest, visiting MANY relatives! While visiting my parents I asked for and got to take with me 2 very old recipe books that belonged to my grandmother. And of course they have several of her recipes in them. I'm so thrilled to be able to preserve her memory through her recipes.

Verlee,  Welcome back! How awesome to get those 2 recipe books.  I got my
Mom's recipe box and it means so much to me.  My sisters just dumped my
Mom's cookbooks when she went to the assisted living home. I couldn't
believe it.  There were a lot of her recipes in that box so I'm glad I've got
them.  Enjoy your grandmother's recipe books!

I can remember my Freshmen year in college in cooking class.  We had groups of 4's and we made piecrust.  The Prof looked at it, and laughed and threw it in the trash.  What a memory!

My parents have lots of cookbooks.  I don't think they even opened half of them.  But the Joy of Cooking is practically falling apart.
That is the one I want.  With notes in the margins.Smile

My Mom's beef pot pie, made with leftovers, was a wonderful treat that we still talk about to this very day. Miss you Mom, thanks for the memories.

I remember my grandma when ever I make goulash. She always had a huge pot of it cooking when we arrived after a 12 hour boring as all get out drive from central NY to south western OH.  I still see that pot sitting on the stove and remember smelling the yumminess when we finally walked into the house!

Thanks, Carol! It is indeed good to be back! And I can't wait for the weather to cool so I can try my grandmother's date cookie recipe.

While looking for something else, I came across an old Woman'sDay magazine in a paper bag.  It was stuffed with recipes Mom had clipped, copied or simply written out.  Some are of her special goodies she baked for special order to make a bit of money when I was in school.  What a treasure!  Many are in her handwritting which is even more special.

Carol, My youngest son in the Navy just deployed for the second time (from San Diego!) and I send him home-baked goodies usually every week. So I empathize with you on testing the A/C! Enjoy your family on Sunday!

A couple of years ago I went through all my Mothers recipes and made each of my sisters a "family cookbook" .  I asked a few other family members and close friends to contribute recipes that were special to us.  I added all the recipes and pictures I could remember from our childhood and holidays.  I typed them all in Word, printed them and made them into spiral keepsake books.  It was a great project to do and my Mother who is 86, was over joyed that I was so interested.

Oh Sharon - what a very special effort.  How beautiful!!
It sure sounds like you're going to be great member of VBB.

This afternoon I was leafing through Southern Living's new Our Best HOLIDAY Desserts ..... an expensive but super magazine.
I saw a cake with yellow frosting and it made me remember the lemon cake we had as kids.
It was a plain yellow cake but frosted with very thick lemon pudding then covered with coconut.   That was breathtakingly beautiful and delicious.
