GRANA here;
In hubby'smost recent book read for pleasure there was a  Swiss dish mentioned...RACLETTE ;  consisting of potatoes & cheese; no details given .We're both hoping   that one or more OF YOU   know what RACLETTE is; maybe even have a recipe to share?????It seems a good  meatless dish to serve in these tough  imes(potatoes are inexpensive &  filling; lowfat cheese is often available, veggie side dishes can be dded to  round out the Meal.
Hubby sugested that I post this request ; hoping you'll come through  w/ an answer; thanks , in advance!

I looked it up.  I thought I had read about it but I was thinking of something else.
  It is  like Fondue where individual people "Fix" portions of food and it is then cooked.  So potatoes and cheese could be placed in the container and placed under the grill and heated. Meat or seafood can be included.
It is suggested that after a heavy meal a light dessert be served.  Fruits and sorbet was listed as two suggestions.
Sounds like the Fondue made it here but the Raclette missed the boat so to speak.

GRANA here;
 Yet another "search" came up w/ this; more detailed answer:

"For those of you who haven't a clue, perhaps I'd better explain what it is. Raclette is essentially melted cheese, served over boiled potatoes with lots of ground black pepper, accompanied by small pickled onions and gherkins. The name comes from the French verb "racler", to scrape, because of the way the melted cheese is scraped off the block.

Like everything with a strong tradition, there are lots of very strict dos and don'ts, which don't actually matter that much. After you've had it a couple of times you'll get to know what you like and what you don't.

This is not so much a recipe as a description, because there's really nothing to it. Although, having said that, if you don't have the right equipment or ingredients, I'm afraid I can't be held responsible for the consequences.

You'll need a raclette machine of some description. They come in approximately two varieties which are impossible to describe, so here's a couple of pictures, courtesy of www.widerview.com/" rel="nofollow">www.widerview.com who sell the things in the US." I  hope this is "THE FINAL ANSWER"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!UndecidedSmiletill we  move on to  those who haveactually tried it(how to&  opinions:YAY/NAYUndecided worth trying???????????  w/ ideas&tips

My son-in-law is of Swiss heritage and Raclette is potatoes with Swiss Cheese. The potatoes are boiled and then presented at the table with cheese over them.

Unfortunately, unless it's a dip, my husband doesn't want anything with cheese sauce.  This does sound interesting though.  Thanks for all the research ladies.

Raclette, a Swiss cheese and dish, consists of melted cheese served with potatoes and dried meat. Any smooth-melting cheese - cheddar, fontal, fontina, gouda, gruyère, jack, Swiss, taleggio, or teleme, even brie - can stand in for raclette. You can bake or boil potatoes.

 I saw a movie on TV (it was cold, so not sure if it was 2011 or 2012) & I do not recall the name of the movie, but I remember one lady  scraping the melted cheese (as in the photo below). The 2 women ( new room mates) had 3 kids between them (in their 20'2) & they were invited to dinner to meet each other. Only the lady that told them how to scrape the cheese, actually  ate the raclette, the other 4 tasted it & then just sat there looking at it.
I hope you can click on the photo & it will take you to a larger version of it.

When I read the description I thought..it must taste great.  How can anything made with cheese on it taste bad..particularly melted cheese!...
Now I need to know..
Ann, what is the book your husband is reading?
