I went to the grocery store yesterday afternoon to purchase a couple cans of Libby's Pumpkin and couldn't find any anywhere.  I had to ask the manager where they moved the pumpkin to only to find

PUMPKIN SHORTAGE??

I went to the grocery store yesterday afternoon to purchase a couple cans of Libby's Pumpkin and couldn't find any anywhere. I had to ask the manager where they moved the pumpkin to only to find out that they didn't move it, they were out. He said there was a shortage of pumpkin and didn't know if there would be any in time for Fall. AHHH!!!! Has anyone else heard the same thing? I'm freaking out right now, I bake with pumpkin all the time!

Needless to say, I went online and talked to a Libby's Representative who told me this:

As you may know, we began the 2010 season with zero inventory levels at all our locations—for the first time in our history. As a result, we made some critical decisions early on: We planted earlier, thus allowing an earlier harvest. We planted more pumpkin, increasing our acreage significantly. We expanded our growing zones. We ran our production facility non-stop once the harvest began in August. We also shipped more product, earlier. All of the steps above helped us to restock store shelves in time for the 2010 Thanksgiving holiday and baking season. However, we also heard that consumers bought Libby's pumpkin with great enthusiasm! While we were glad people were finding the pumpkin they wanted, it did leave us without any reserve of pumpkin for the start of the 2011 season. Unfortunately, this means that we may again experience a shortage of pumpkin sometime in the coming months, which will be alleviated when we begin the next harvest, in mid-August of 2011.

I'm going to check around town this weekend and see if I can locate a few cans that "hopefully" are still sitting on the shelves.

I live in Memphis. I hope it was just that grocery store (Kroger). I'm going to check Wal-Mart this weekend. Wish me luck!

I usually stock up during the holiday season because my family are pumpkin fans. I have not heard that there is a shortage and I am also a gardener and my pumpkins are already looking excellent, I have three varieties and they have flowered and are beginning fruit. I live in MA. Check another store, maybe walmart as another poster said... I find it hard to believe there's none! Good luck, from another pumpkin lover

You can substitute sweet potato in most recipes that call for pumpkin.
If you use canned sweet potato make sure you drain it well. If you use fresh, bake or microwave do not boil. Make sure you get as much moisture out as possible.

I didn't know the pumpkin shortage might extend into this year. I will have to start looking for some now so I have it for the fall.

I was able to locate some pumpkin on a shelf at the Commissary this weekend. YAY! I bought 6 cans.

I remember the pumpkin shortage last fall. I hope it doesn't go into this fall because I must have pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving.

I live in eastern CT and went to 3 stores and could not find any Libby"s pumpkin. They had an organic canned pumpkin for $3.00 a can.

The only store in our town that has pumpkin right now is Whole Foods and they're a bit pricey. I will wait another week or so to see if the "regular" markets are stocking it on the shelves.

In the Pittsburgh, Pa area where I live there is a shortage of the Libby's solid pack pumpkin. There are, however, a few cans of the Libby's Pumpkin pie mix on the shelves. I called many grocery chains to locate just one can, and a Shop and Save in my area said they had some. When I arrived at the store there was one lone solid pack can with a HUGE dent in it. There were some cans of the Pumpkin Pie mix, but I was looking for the solid pack.I decided not to buy the can with the dent. When friends and I went to the Outer Banks, NC last week I checked their shelves at the Food Lion, and there was not one can (not even the mix). I like to keep a couple cans on hand for the fall, and since I only have one 15oz. can here at my home I feel I need to save it until I see a new stock of canned pumpkin hit the store shelves. It just seems so odd not to be able to purchase it at this time of year. I hope the crop wasn't damaged by the unusual weather we have had this year, but I don't want to get my hopes up!
