Gale if I followed all your recipes I would easily put back the 120 pounds that I lost.
One recipe sounds better than the next.  Although I am leaning to the Walnut rolls made with almonds.  That will be for breakfast this weekend.  I will let you know how it turned out.

Hi Nancy,It's been a long time since I've made poppy seed roll, the produce department in your grocery store is where you would find the poppy seed and they can grind it for you, they used to anyway. There is also pre-made poppy seed filling in by the pie fillings, the brand here is called Solo. You could try a food processor also?

Hi Nikki,I know a lot of this stuff is pretty rich, but just eat small amounts that's what I do.It seems that you can easily do small amounts because of being so rich, that's all you can eat.I lost 110# 35 years ago and never allow my self to gain more than 5#,then its back on the diet.We usually only have these things during the holidays or for special occasions.Losing weight and maintaining is a life long battle.I love to eat and I love food,I know it's hard .

Oh - Gale , now I see.  I have a totally different idea for what poppy seed is.  I buy my poppy seed in the spice dept of WalMart  not produce... it's a 2 oz glass bottle by McCormick - as part of their Gourmet Collection ... tiny, tiny dark silvery grey seeds.

The produce dept wouldn't have anything like this .... and if they did, my store, sure would not have the ability to grind them. lol

The bottle I have says to add 2 tbsp to sugar cookie dough or 1/3 cup to lemon round cake recipe.

It is a life long commitment to keep the weight off.  I watch myself pretty carefully but it is sooo hard sometimes.  I have kept the weigh off for almost 12 years now.  I feel better than I did when I was in my teen's, 20's, 30's I was in my 40's when it finally hit me that this time I was going to make thisdiet work.  I mentioned in another post loosing weight is something you have to want to do for yourself, you can't do it for a wedding or a reunion or anything like that you have to want to do it for YOU.
My biggest problem is I love to cook and to eat what I cook.  I especially love baking sweet things. So now when I bake I usually freeze half or I take it someplace to share.  That way I am not tempted quite so much.
My biggest problem is portion control a sweet bread like the one you posted would be gone in no time if I didn't freeze a portion.

Nancy if you have any "bulk" spice stores near you check there for the poppy seeds.  Also try an"ethnic" market.  Quite often near the deli or on an end cap there will be a display of spices in bags.  Poppy seeds might well be there. (Go into the "little market" on the corner that you have passed for years and never ventured in because it was so small.)

Hi Nikki - I live in a very rural area and there's no such thing as a store that sells bulk spices ... there's no such thing as an ethnic market .... we don't even have a deli.  We do have some bigs ervice stations that sell sandwiches - lol.

A small WalMart Super Center is where I shop.  Or I can go to a small independent store that is very good but high priced.

In the neighboring town there's a big market with usual and very unusual things ... it's a real delight to shop in but the prices are just too much for regular shopping.  That's where I found that incredible little cellophane bag of dried ginger ... in the produce dept on an end cap - lol lol.
Next time I'm over there I'll look for poppy seed.

Glad you like them. I cannot eat them. Some sort of problem with heart gasses.

Wish there was a way that I could send the stuff to you. I guess I am lucky to be living in an area where I can easily get things like this.
I have a friend that lives in Maine and a trip to the grocery store is a project.  Not like you can run out for one thing and not put together a full list.  I was thinking that on my last trip out west, going through Wyoming I thought that if you were going to the store it would be neighborly to call your neighbors to find out if they needed anything as well.  It would be miles and miles before you saw stores or even houses.

Oh Ann,I always loved my Mom's poppy seed rolls, these are very ethnic. With a glass of cold milk,I died and went to heaven LOL.It is true that you could test positive for narcotics, even though they are not opium poppies.I believe Solo brand carries pre- made poppy seed filling.I am near the West Side market and you can buy all sorts of jellies and fillings for pastries.Like lekvar, which is a prune filling another favorite.I am very fortunate to live near this culinary gold mine.   Smile There is a recipe or there was at one time a recipe for Lemon, poppy seed bundt cake on the can of the solo poppy seed.Oh my wonderful.
