I found this recipe in VBB and I see that one of the ingredients is oven-toasted rice cereal.  Anybody know what this is?  Is it any different than crispy rice cereal?

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
  • 2 cups (12-oz. pkg.) NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels
  • 1 jar (7 oz.) marshmallow crème
  • 6 cups oven-toasted rice cereal
  • 24 bite-size peanut butter-filled chocolates
  • 1/2 cup NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Butterscotch Flavored Morsels
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable shortening
  • Directions

LINE 24 muffin cups with paper liners.

MELT butter in a large, heavy-duty saucepan over low heat. Add semi-sweet morsels and marshmallow crème; stir until chocolate is melted and mixture is smooth. Remove from heat. Add cereal and stir until evenly coated. Press a heaping tablespoonful of cereal mixture into each prepared muffin cup. Press a bite-size chocolate into cereal mixture. Press a second heaping tablespoonful of cereal mixture over chocolate.

COMBINE butterscotch morsels and vegetable shortening in heavy-duty plastic bag. Microwave on MEDIUM-HIGH (70%) power for 30 seconds; knead. Microwave at additional 10- to 15-second intervals, kneading until smooth. Cut tiny corner from bag; squeeze to drizzle over tops. Refrigerate until firm, about 1 hour. Store in sealed container.

I would imagine you would toast krispie rice cereal in the oven.  Other than that, I don't know,

Jean - I've made that two or three times and use regular Rice Krispies with great success
People who try this candy love it!
I love making it - it's fairly easy and requires no baking.

Thanks, Nancy.  I was wondering if it was something like Rice Krispies only they were trying not to use a brand name from another company.

Jean,  Thanks for that tasty-sounding recipe.  I like to make candy for Christmas and send it to my gang.  I think this is one recipe they'd all really like.

These Peanut Butter Candy Cheaters  are so easy - and so good.

Try the No-Bake Butterscotch Snack Bites too.  (I use walnuts)
I make them in my mini muffin cupcake pans.   They are delicious!

I think anytime a recipe calls for toasted rice cereal they really mean rice krispies, but don't want to use the brand name

The others are right, use rice krispies(I use the store brand, it is cheaper), also, the recipe might want to make sure you do not use puffed rice cereal.

These sound very good.  Just might make this a "project" for my Grandson.  His sisters birthday is soon and this sounds like it might be a good treat for the party.
