This was done at least 60 years ago ...  Was there a cake mix then?   I can't remember, all I know is that
yellow cake was made in two 8" or 9" pans.
It was frosted with real lemon pudding - very thick and very easy to spread.
It didn't go on smooth and flat.     It was full of swirls and little peaks.
Then it was covered with a thick layer of coconut.
It was oh, so beautiful and absolutely delicious.

Next time I'm supposed to take a dessert somewhere I'm going to try this and see if it still works.

Do you have any Remembered Recipes?

Years ago my mom used to make corn fritters like none other I have ever had. They were fried and we dunked them in syrup is all I remember about them.

Crepes filled with sweetened dry cottage cheeses and raisins.I may revisit this recipe and use my homemade ricotta cheese and a fruit sauce or even a chocolate sauce.

My mom used to make the very-best beef pot pie. I have never been able to duplicate it.

My mother used to make delicious potatoe pancakes.  Never made them myself.  I remember peeling the potatoes and also grating them on the cheese grater.

Another memory  ... not much fun.   Grandma made her own butter (well, we all made our own butter after the milk and cream had been separated).  She disliked the HARD cold butter so she generally refused to refrigerate it.  Her house  reeked of sour butter.

I wonder what made me think of that this morning?

My Mom used to make her own perogies filled with a potato/cheese filling or prunes.  I always got to pinch them closed before they got boiled.

Mary Ann...

My Mom made homemade perogies too!  Boy were they wonderful...I am so glad I have her recipe to make them.  I haven't tried them yet, but one day I will...there is a lot of work to making them!!

Oh my...let see, my Mom loved to cook and bake but she made the best pie crust!  It was so light and flakey...I try and I just don't have the knack for making pie crust like hers.  Also, she could make a meringue that was picture perfect.  My Mom was something else!

Grandma's chicken and dumplings ~ they weren't the fluffy biscuit kind, but almost flat strips of dough that my Dad called "slicks". (Never said within Grandma's hearing range though!) Wasn't able to get the recipe out of her before she died, because she didn't think she was dying! But recently found an old cookbook that the Women's Missions group at our church put together for a fund raiser and there it was...on the very last page of the Main Dish section.  I sat down and cried!

My Mom used to can every year, sour cherries,Queen ann cherries ,Italian prune plums, pickles and peppers, these were all from our yard.My swing set was just under the plum trees and I remember going down the sliding board and grabbing the plums on the way down how sweet and juicy they were. She baked every other day and the house smelled wonderful.I did learn a lot from her,she left me with knowledge and wonderful memories. She made strudel which I never learned to make, that strudel dough was stretched out the size of our large kitchen table and filled with apples and walnuts.I will make strudel one day, that is on my bucket list of things to do.I just thought of something else, something I learned from my kindergarten teacher,we made butter. She passed a jar of heavy cream around to all of the kids to shake and we made butter, she served it on crackers ,I think that is my first memory of butter, mom always baked with it but we actually made it.Then I asked my mom if we could do that and of course she said we could,I wanted to show my little brother how it was done.

I remember when my Mom had any pie dough left from making fruit pies, she would take the dough and put it into this little pie pan.  She would take sugar, cinn., pats of butter and baked it with her pies.  When I came home from playing, she would have it sitting there waiting just for me.  What a treat that was, gee...she always made us feel special.  We were truly loved!

My mother had 2 older sisters & the next to oldest lived in the house behind ours. She was the baker. One year my mom bought my birthday cake from the bakery, I was so upset. I wanted the banana nut cake that my aunt made. My aunt made nut, poppy-seed, cheese & apricot rolls for Easter, all kind of cookies for holidays. She did the potato salad, fried chicken,  pies & cakes for picnics (the other 2 sisters either bought the supplies or gave her the money to buy them & help her prep but she did all the baking). I was the oldest of the kids & I got to help pick the walnut meats out of the ones my mom & other aunt cracked  & I got to  turn the handle to grind the walnuts.  One year the kids & I went to visit her & she was baking, I asked if I could look at her homemade cookbooks & she brought a few notebooks out. I was so excited, I got out a pen & asked for paper (I wanted to copy some of my favorite ones), wellllllllllll She had everything written down neatly BUT no amounts.  She said she made the recipes so much that she knew how much to use but since her husband died & she was raising young twin boys alone, she sometimes had to stop & would forget what she had put in the bowl so she wrote everything down & used a ruler to move down the items, but she did not need to write the amount.  I guess I take after her a little, I have a list of ingred. for meatloaf, stuffed cabbage, lasagna, & stuffed peppers but no amounts. When a neighbor asked for my taco recipe, I had to go there & make them while she wrote things down. A sister-in-law wanted my lasagna recipe & I told her I did not have amounts but she could come over when I made it & she finally came over one morning & when she saw MY recipe book, she told me she thought I did not want to give it to her, so I just told her she would have to watch & write things down.

I remember a spice cake called Busyday Cake.  I have no idea where the recipe is now but it brings back fond memories.

My Mom made wilted lettuce. Dad planted the garden with leaf lettuce, onions, radishes, and bell peppers. Cook up crisp bacon and crumble on top of these veggies then pour hot bacon grease on top. Make a pan of cornbread. Oh what memories and how fattening and good.

I remember doing canning every summer with my mother.  We canned tomato sauce, pickles,  chow chow, blackberries, peaches, pears, cherries, you nane it, we canned it.  We kept all the jars downstairs in the basement on shelves. Those were the days.  Haven't done any canning now.

Charlena -- ahhhh - the bacon fat dressing poured over leaf lettuce!!  How  I remember that.  For our dressing it was bacon fat, vinegar and lots of sugar.

My Grandmothers made Homemade Biscuits. I would go visit my Grandmothers to eat a homemade biscuit.
