 I think you add about a teaspoon or a tablespoon of shortning (crisco)  to the chips while  their are melting to make the chips more spreadable.

Yes Marie -- I'm far from an expert but I melt the chips in my microwave and they get hard again as soon as they're cool.
Remember if you frost eclairs the chocolate will be a bit " crisp" .... not soft and "flexible" like the usual eclair frosting.
 And it sure will taste better!!!

How do you plan to melt the chips?

Add a bit of butter, oil or shortening to the chips and the chocolate should stay soft.  Or you could also add a bit of hot cream and make a simple ganache type glaze.

They will definitely harden if you don't add anything to them.  This is how I usually make my chocolate bark during the holidays.  I just melt the chocolate chips and spread on wax paper and top with ground up nuts.  After it cools, it hardens and then I just break it apart.

Interesting information.  I've never melted them.  Only used them for cookies, etc.  Thanks.
