HOBO PIES???

I was just wondering if any of you have ever made or had Hobo pies.These are made over an open fire.They are made with two slices of white bread and fillings of your choice.You place one slice of white bread that has been buttered butter side down into the hobo pie maker place a couple of tablespoons of your favorite canned pie filling on top of that and then another slice of white bread buttered side out on top of that.Close the Hobo pie maker,trim the bread off that hangs outside of the hobo pie maker and hold over the fire until done.We used to make these all the time when we were kids.I'm pretty sure these could be made with a savory filling as well.Any ideas or recipes would be appreciated.

Never heard of Hobo pies.  Obviously, you have to have a Hobo pie maker.

On our many viisits to Disney World, we would often take our dear daughter to the campgrounds for the evening movie.  Part of the fun was cooking over the open fire before the movie began.  First we started making s'mores.  As years went by, we got more brave and daring and added different things.  These Hobo Pies were one of the later things we tried and enjoyed.  Never had a savory filling, just apple filling, but I bet the savory would be just as good.

I hve had this type of pie when I was young  This type of sandwich maker also worked used on a gas stove.  We used to make grilled cheese  and applesauce with cinnamon "pies."

I have heard of and have a recipe for Hobo Pies however I have not made them as of yet!  They sound wonderful!  I do believe the recipe I have came from Our State Magazine.

never heard of this--------------sounds good----------------but where would you buy the pie maker?

maybe one of those cheap electric sandwich makers would work       for results     but no fun of fire

Older son use to go camping & made camp pies & sloppy joes using a metal sandwich form bought from a camping store (he bought a 2nd one from Meijer). He would pack cooked sloppy joe mix & taco flavored meat, canned apple pie filling, jars of pizza sauce, eggs, cheese, pepperoni slices & lots of bread. 
 I recall him saying he made sloppy joes, tacos (no lettuce), apple pies, pizza & scrambled egg sandwiches.
He had a square & a round mold. He wanted 2 so 1 would be cooking while the other was cooling to be reused.

I used to have one of the "sandwich makers" years ago.  Long handle that was split in two, hinged on the back side where the bread would go.  I used it over the gas flame in my first apartment.
There is an electric appliance that you can get now that does pretty much the same thing.  Place bread or tortilla in it and put the fillings in another slice of bread or tortilla and you close the top and it bakes.
It is fun and different.

Nothing besides money will draw family and friends closer than a fire! lol lol lol .Nellie I think you  would enjoy doing these with your grandson.They sell them in sporting good depts and stores such as Dick's and Gander Mountain here in the Clevland Ohio area.I'm not sure what stores you have in your area.Call ahead and save yourself the drive if you want one of these.I'm pretty sure these can be odered on line.

We got our square sandwich maker many years ago at Bass Pro.  Think I recall seeing it the last time we were there in June.

 I grew up eating those & so  did my 2 sons.Ours were filled w/slices of American cheese & usually a slice of ripe tomato; Once in awhile I used a square of chocolate &  a marshmallow, making a kind of s'more  I gave my  sandwich maker grill  to my dil ; over20 years ago,  when downsizing for our move to our condo.i miss the  tuna meltsI also made; Inever knew its correctname, till now  Wink

I've never heard of Hobo Pies, but they do sound delicious, though s'mores are hard to beat!
