I remember getting peaches when I was a kid.  We would travel from Connecticut where we lived to Florida every summer when school let out.  We would stop in Georgia at road side stands and buy bags of peaches.
These were the peaches that had the fuzz.  We would get itchy chins because of all the peach fuzz.
We would be covered in peach juice.
I think that they have just developed peaches with less fuzz because people didn't like the fuzz and somehow those changes took away flavor as well.  Sure they travel better but they are hard as rocks.  Once they soften they go from rock hard to mealy and dry in a matter of days.
I often get a few peaches and if they are good I will go back and buy lots more.

One of the things lots of stores do is keep them and a lot of other produce in cold storage to keep it longer but that ruins the flavor and texture.

I love any fresh fruit with a glaze wrapped all up in a crepe with a big dollop of whipped cream.Or a fruit crisp warm from the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

I too love apple or peach crisp, heavy on the crisp! But a real close second is strawberry rhubarb (yes, I know rhubarb is a vegetable) pie. Made the pie for Thanksgiving and the family requested it again for Christmas dessert.

Blueberries, cherries and strawberries together make a beautiful tasteful pie or cobbler.

nikki,
i remember the same thing, but we were in texas   and every time in the summer when we went to my g.m. house           we would actually go into the orchards and pick our own            they don't allow that now
but the same sticky sweet juice going down our ams              but the smell would drive you crazy  and you just HAD to eat one before you got home
we always got several bushels   and put it all up
