For 2 1/2 yrs I worked as a caregiver for a dbl stroke survivor. Including her husband there were 4 of us providing her care. That meant 4 cooks in the kitchen and he didn't believe in expiration dates. With so many people preparing meals it was easy for food to be pushed to the back of the fridge, freezer or cabinet. The Monday afternoon gal didn't know when I had prepared the tuna salad. Finally I brought a Sharpie and started putting a date on everything that I opened or prepared. Her husband finally agreed to a thorough search and toss session when he baked a cake and used baking powder that had expired nearly 9 yrs earlier. (I've had thicker pancakes than his cake lol) When the others finally followed my lead and started dating everything we noticed that Carol's tummy aches were fewer and far between.
If we have left overs and don't use it the next day, it goes into the freezer. I also date and label everything that goes into the freezer. I, too, keep bread in the freezer and take slices out when we need them. The upstairs freezer from my fridge is used for some food and leftovers. The large freezer downstairs has everything else that I purchase to stock up when it is on sale and I have coupons.
