Here in Central IL we have had high heat and humidity.  Tomatoes are supposed to be more of a tropical plant but most of our friends and neighbors are complaining that veggies in general are having a rough time in our gardens.  Someone brought some tomatoes in to church to share and lamented that they are not as big as most years.  Still, a fresh tomato from the local garden is far better than the ones which are picked too early and must travel hundreds of miles.

The tomatoes I buy at that little stand are almost as good as home grown .... ( Angela - they're 93 cents a pound here ) ...... they are sure better than WalMart's.

My first tomatoes were stolen after I left on a Saturday. My next tomatoes were stolen after 12 midnight  with others watching. I was told " I didn't what to do." I now have a heavy chain and a new lock on my gate. Because I grow tomatoes does not mean "Help yourself" when I leave or attempt to Sleep. When the thieves stole tomatoes they damaged the vines in their steal and grab.
I cut a Brandywine that weighted 1 pound. I have some that should weight 2 pounds. I grow tomatoes in the Pink family, the Black family, Stripped family and Red family.

We had a garden for years, but it is too much to handle with my husband's MS. So, I purchase them at the local farm stand.  They are delicious.

OMG,  I just had a brandywine tomato with lowfat cottage cheese.  It was a huge
tomato.  It was so juicy. I use a big dinner plate and put the cut up tomato around
the edges and a scoop of cottage cheese in the middle. One of our TOPS club
members has a huge garden and takes them in for us.  It is better than the tomatoes
in my garden.  They live out in the country where it is hotter and veggies grow
really big. I get my patty pan squash from them too and lemon cucumber.  We just
put money in the cup and it goes to our club. They donate the veggies to our
club. Last Wed night I made blt's and it took only 1 tomato for 2 sandwiches. I wish
my tomatoes would be that big!!!!

Verlee,  Love your avatar!! One of my friends went on the Alaska cruise for their 50th anniversary. She said that it was
the best cruise to go on!! The best thing that I did was to join TOPS.  I feel really lucky to get those tomatoes! My
tomatoes really taste good too but the brandywine tomato is totally awesome! I have had a lot of different kinds of
tomatoes but this one is the best!! We have another lady that brings in lemons, oranges, and grapefruit. I think I will
be a member of TOPS for the rest of my life.  lol lol

Nancy,  I feel really blessed to get those tomatoes! I eat them first before mine. There are a couple of ladies
in TOPS that are on Social Security and get small checks so the fruits and veggies really help them. You
put in whatever you can afford. I wish you had a good place to grow tomatoes too. You deserve to have good
tomatoes too!!

my garden hasn't done very well this year, yesterday it  was 94 at noon, the heat in florida has just been unbearable. my low water plants (jade, catcus, and orchids)  are doing great,  but my veggies didn't make it,  maybe next year.

We miss our home grown tomatoes that we used to harvest in mass quantities when we lived in upstate NY!! Here in NC we can't grow a tomato to save our lives!  It's really sad.  We do visit the farmer's market but it's just not the same. Cry

Nancy, I know that you went to a little stand and got tomatoes. Are they home gown tomatoes?
Do you have any Farmers Markets in your area? You can get really good home gown tomatoes
there. We have them here and I go to a Farmers Market in Holland, when I go to MI. I'm sure with
the hot temperatures my sister's tomatoes will be done by the time I get there. The Farmers
Market is on Wed. and Sat. Sometimes you have to pay a little more but it is worth having home
grown veggies and fruits. Good Luck!!!!
