This spring I put 3 tomato plants in smallish pots  on my driveway ...... on one every blossom fell of with the stem very soon after blooming.  I tossed the plant.   On the second plant some insect (worm?) attacked and ate everything except the major stems.   The third is still trying - it 's still 'way too small for an "adult" tomato but it has produced two very small, very mealy ripe ones.     I'm giving up.

Nancy,  2 very small, very mealy ripe ones. lol lol  Did you have good luck when you had 45 plants?
Last year my tomatoes were terrible but this year they look awesome. We have had 2 cherry tomatoes
last week and this week there will be about 7 big ones. I'm getting some cottage cheese to have with
them. I planted my tomatoes about a month later than normal so I can hardly wait to have some good
home grown tomatoes. After I weigh in on Wed., I'm going to have a blt with lots of bacon. Yum Yum

Since moving into this condo I can plant only things in pots and I'm having no luck at all.

Nancy is right on this one! BLT's need Miracle Whip ! I'm a Mayo girl on everything else! Every summer I always buy Miracle Whip for our BLT's  I also go through about 20 jars of Mayo through out the year using it on other sandwiches, dips potato and macaroni salad, coleslaw. We have a lot of neighborhood get togethers, our Block Party.I think I'm going to start making my own Mayo it's getting to be very expensive.

Gale,

I bet that is good with Strawberry jelly!

I also love Cream Cheese and Olive sandwiches.  I take an 8 oz. block of cream cheese, chop green olives and add shredded parm. cheese.  Mix it all together and spread of bread.  Yum!!

Nancy,  All 24 of my tomato plants are in 5 gal. pots. I use Miracle Gro 3 months continous feed dirt and
as soon as I plant them I add a tomato cage to the pot. I also use Miracle Gro feed for tomatoes that you
add every 7 days. If I don't use the feed every 7 days they are just average plants. They are really big now
and I picked another 4 ripe ones today. Monday I picked 5.  We started picking off our 6 cherry tomato
plants last week.  The tomatoes need a lot of sun. We had high heat and humidity last weekend and they
really started to turn color. We only get humidity a couple of times a year but this year we are going to get
high humidity next Wed. for the second time. Reminds me of Michigan!!!

Summer isn't complete without fresh tomatoes!  I never bothered with the salt shaker - just rub the tomato on my shirtail and chomp.
Summertime was canning time.  Fruit, veggies, especially tomatoes in every form - juice, whole in juice, stewed, sauce etc.
Mom also made all flavors of jams and jellies including a tomato preserve(sweet) with cherry tomatoes that my dad loved.  I did not share his fondness for that one.
Any veggies fresh from the garden sliced thin on a thick piece of homemade bread with butter or miracle whip -- yumm

Gale and Marie, your childhood summers were very like my own.  I miss the big garden.

I always planted a big garden with a variety of veggies.  The first year was bountiful and then after that, rain, rain and more rain.  The garden rotted...I was sick.  Last year I just planted tomatoes, I got a few tomatoes and then they got funky.  So this year, I planted 2 tomato plants, so far so good...knock on wood!

I love a tomato sandwich with MAYO!!!  Yum!!

Hi Frances, you know when we were young we would dream of far away places. Now as we are growing older we realize, just as Dorothy said in the Wizard of OZ ( There's no place like home) Isn't that the truth! Happiness comes from within and sometimes it is in our own backyard! Thanks for sharing your story.

In Response to Re: Favorite Summer Sandwiches/ Care to share Yours? : Marie, my Dad was everything to me.He was a Butcher by trade and he taught me so much.He taught me how to make sausage, fresh garlic sausage and a liver and rice sausage we called Hurka.I leaned how to cut up chickens also.My Mom was an excellent cook and baker, she made homemade bread and pastries on a daily basis and she canned everything. We had sour cherry ,queen anne cherries, pears ,apples and Italian plum trees in our yard. Our swing set was under one of the Italian plum trees and I remember pulling plums off to eat as I went down the sliding board,so many wonderful memories. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of those two wonderful people. Thanks for letting me share.

My aunt had an older friend who would give me a cream cheese & apricot jelly on toast if I visited her with my aunt.  In the winter (usually the middle of Jan. through Feb.) I make myself the sandwich with a mug of tea as a bedtime snack.

Wow did you all hit a real memory for me.  My Mom would make a cream cheese and olive spread,  green olives and walnuts chopped up and mixed in with cream cheese.  They were ok as long as I didn't get too many olives, as a kid I did not like the green olives all that much.  She also made a cream cheese and jelly sandwich, what's not to like about that?
Now for the real "kicker" she would make an omelette and fill it with jelly.  She made this for herself I don't recall anyone else eating one.  I couldn't get past the color that resulted..the purple of the jelly mixing with the yellow of the eggs it resulted in a sort of odd green color in places.
