EATING CACTUS

Are there any of you that feel adventurous? How about trying some cactus? I have made this for about 20 years and actually get cravings for it if it has been too long! I had a neighbor that was Hispanic many years ago and we shared recipes. Cactus tastes like spicy green beans and is really good! It can be used in all kinds of things but this is my favorite way.

You'll find a jar of cactus in the Mexican isle in the store. It will be called Nopallitos. First open the jar and rinse the contents in a collander. Don't worry if it has a bit of slim feel to it. It's like when you might cut some aloe vera plant to put on a sore. That's slimmy too. After rinsing put in a frying pan and either fry or simmer with water for about 3 min. I use water now instead of frying. Add some scrambled eggs and some tomato in and cook until eggs are done. Good plain or rolled up in tortillas.

I would try this for sure.I have eaten prickly pears and candy made from that also.I'll have to look for this the next time I go shopping.I love Mexican food.

Thanks for the info Vicki. Lots of the stores around here carry cactus(huge hispanic population around here) in the produce department. Somehow I just can't see myself buying, much less eating, those huge things with the prickly things on them. I did try prickly pears once and even though I made some jelly out of them, they weren't appealing either lol.

I just may have to try this. I see fresh and in jars near me in many stores.
I have often wondered about the prickly pear I just may have to try that as well.
I just might have to make a "resolution" to try something new at least once a month.

HM, I figured that nobody would try this!

But really, this is good! When you buy the jar you don't have to clean them although I have done that too. When I first tried this I figured that many a desert visiter that had gotten stranded had tried this and the animals eat it so I just closed my eyes and took a bite and was pleasantly surprised! I've made it for family and company over the years and the reaction is always the same! :)

here in s.e. tx they sell it in the flea mkts and a lot of other places in cups ready to eat already pickled
or various other concoctions and all the groceries have it in almost every form
i've also been to the border towns many times and i have tried it and didn't like it enough to make it on my own

I have never made cactus at home, but have eaten and enjoyed it a local restaurant. I, too need to get a bit more adventurous and make this at home.

We used to tease one of our friends that was Mexican about eating cactus. He was a great guy from Santa Ana, California. He was also the head Cheer Leader at our University of California, Berkeley. I've never had a chance to try it, but I'm not a very adventurous eater.

I first heard of this on the tv show Chopped. If you know how to cook it i am sure that it is tasty.

Never had cactus but I love the fruit "prockly pears". I've had the jelly, juice, candy and the fruit. I add the fruit in my smoothies all the time.

I had cactus last year when I was in AZ. I tried prickly pear candy and it was very good. I also had a cole slaw that was made with
cactus and it was good too. I doubt that I would ever try to make it on my own though.
