I have done my "unusual" pot roast in the crock pot or slow cooker what ever you want to call it.  But I have also done it in the oven in my enameled cast iron Dutch oven...that I got at Aldi's for under $20.00!
Brown the seasoned beef, I use a 7-bone roast or what happens to be the least expensive chunk of meat I can find.
I also put a bit of color on the onions, celery, carrots just to give it a bit of flavor.
Add some beef broth to the pan and add 1/2 cup or a bit more horseradish and a can of whole berry cranberry sauce.
Throw the lid on and let it cook away until the meat is tender.
This can be done stove top, oven or slow cooker.

I have done some BBQ pork in the slow cooker.  I will brown the pork, I usually do this with country ribs, they are boneless meaty strips. Add a bit of water and a bit of BBQ sauce.  When the meat is tender, 4 hours or so later.  I will skim off the grease, add a bit more BBQ sauce and cook with the top off to thicken up the sauce.  Or I have taken them out and place them on a baking pan and put them in a hot oven to crisp up the meat a bit. Almost anything you would braise you can do in the slow cooker.  I find I do not use mine much I would rather use the oven and cook slow and low.  I also use the pressure cooker more often than the slow cooker.

Thanks for the tips and recipes for this post and your last post.I wish I could still use my pressure cooker but being in a wheelchair and cooking from it just wouldn't be safe for me anymore. My son and hubby are a little nervous about taking it off the stove so this is just a better way for me.I do take things out of the oven or off the stove top if they aren't heavy the heavy things I leave to the guys.

Gale if you happen to see one of the "new" electric pressure cookers check that out.  They look as easy to use as a slow cooker.
Load everything in set the time and pressure and it's done.  Pretty much like setting the controls on the slow cooker.
I think they are still pretty expensive but give Aldi's time and I am sure they will have out soon.  Or search the Sears or Penny's outlet stores if you have any near you.

and if it's electric you can set it on a lower surface or small table so you can reach it easier

OH WOW! I didn't even know that an electric pressure cooking like that was available.Nikki, Thanks for letting me know and I will keep an eye out at Aldi's and our Marc's store I sure do miss using that.I used to make chicken soup and after straining it and picking the meat off the bones I would put the chicken bones back in and over cook them until they were mushy then I would give the dogs a little everyday.Nellie, Thanks for the suggestion I do have a small round metal table that I use for my work space.I keep all my cooking and baking utensils in small crocks on the table that way I don't have to run around ( More like wheel around) getting things. This is where I would use this just like the crock pot.

Well I just couldn't resist playing with my new toy ! I had 5 lonely potatoes looking at me, about 6 slices of bacon and a half a pint of sour cream. So I threw together what I'm calling "Loaded Potato Soup".It was so good.If anyone wants my recipe I would be glad to share.Sometimes these throw together things taste so good so I have to write this down before I forget.

Hi Nancy,so nice to see you here! Yes there are onions in it.

LOADED BAKED POTATO SOUP

5 MEDIUM POTATOES PEELED AND CUBED I USED IDAHO POTATOES
1 MEDIUM ONION CHOPPED SMALL
6 SLICES BACON DICED ABOUT 1/4"
7 CUPS OF WATER
2 TEASPOONS SEASONED SALT
1 TABLESPOON DRY PARSLEY
3 TABLESPOONS BUTTER
1 CUP SOUR CREAM
3 TABLESPOONS FLOUR
SHREDDED CHEDDAR CHEESE FOR SPRINKLING ON TOP WHEN SERVED

PLACE THE CUBED POTATOES IN THE CROCK POT

POUR IN THE WATER

ADD SEASONED SALT,DRIED PARSLEY AND BUTTER

SAUTE' ONIONS AND BACON TOGETHER UNTIL ONIONS ARE CARMELIZED

THE BACON DOESN'T HAVE TO BE CRISP IT WILL COOK VERY WELL IN THE SOUP

ADD THE BACON AND ONIONS TO THE SOUP.COOK ON A LOW SETTING FOR 6 HRS.OR HIGH FOR 3 HRS.

OR UNTIL THE POTATOES ARE COOKED, BRING TO A SIMMER

IN A SMALL BOWL STIR TOGETHER THE SOUR CREAM AND FLOUR,MIX WELL

PUT A LADLE FULL OF THE HOT SOUP IN WITH THE SOUR CREAM AND FLOUR MIX IN QUICKLY

TO TEMPER THE SOUR CREAM SO IT DOESN'T CURDLE

ADD ANOTHER LADLE FULL AND STIR WELL

ADD THE SOUR CREAM AND FLOUR MIXTURE TO THE SOUP POT

BRING TO A SIMMER AND COOK FOR 5 MINUTES TO THICKEN SOUP

SERVE IN BOWL AND ADD CHEDDAR CHEESE ON TOP IF DESIRED

that sounds good   i love baked potato soup
but, next time use chicken broth instead of water, and it will be even better         that's the only way i boil potatoes anymore           instead of flour i use instant potato buds to thicken the soup

and i put the sour cream and cheese in the bowl first and ladle the soup over the top

and nancy
i found an easy and fast recipe for baked potato soup in  'swapped recipes"  a long time ago

it's easy for me because of my grip problems i use a lot of frozen chopped veggies  but you can also use regular
i use chopped onion and the southern style hash browns (unseasoned) that are chopped into about 1/2 in cubes
i use about 1 T butter and put in minced garlic and about 1/2 c chopped onion and saute just until melted
add 1 can chicken broth and about 2 c chopped potatoes and seasoned salt to taste, simmer  when potatoes are getting done i add 1/3 c carnation milk    and enough potato buds to thicken soup  (1 or 2 T)
and simmer about 5 mins more
as i said above i put as much sour cream and cheddar in the bowl also chive and real bacon bits and ladle soup over
it's fast and easy when it's just me  and makes about 2 bowls

Hi Nellie,I agree the chicken broth and potato buds would have been better but this was a spur of the moment recipe.I just used what I had here.5 potatoes looking at me (potatoes have eyes, lol!) 1 cup sour cream and 6 little lonely pieces of bacon.I said ah lets get creative. For a first time recipe wasn;t too bad but there is always room for improvement.I just have to play with a new toy when I get one.

Thanks Gale -- thank you very much.  Last night I made your version of potato soup and used Nellie's addition of chicken broth.  Of course, it would make too much for me so I planned on taking some to my neighbor.  When I tasted my first bowl I decided to keep it all!!
I am still wondering about sour cream being added to a soup but still in love with that recipe.
A good recipe is such a great find.
