I made some homemade cranberry relish the other day. I hadn't made it in at least two years. It made a big size bowl, too! Funny....I don't remember it being such a big batch before when I made it. B

Cranberry Relish

I made some homemade cranberry relish the other day. I hadn't made it in at least two years. It made a big size bowl, too! Funny....I don't remember it being such a big batch before when I made it. But that's okay.....we didn't mind because it is delicious! A lot better than what you buy in the stores. I'm not positive without looking, but I think it was a VBB recipe that I used. I wasn't sure if it would turn out okay because it calls for an orange, which I did not have at the time. So I added an extra apple on top of the apple it called for. It was yummy!!! Have another bag of cranberries in the frig and going to make another batch this week. I think I may try freezing some of it for later use. What do you think.....is cranberry relish freezable????

NOT REAL SURE. TRY FREEZING A SMALL BATCH.I LOVE CRANBERRIES.I MAKE BREADS, APPLE/CRANBERRY PIE. I 'AM GOING TO TRY TO MAKE FUDGE

I'm not sure about the relish being freezable; but I do know that cranberries freeze quite well. You can keep an unopened bag of cranberries in the freezer for a year, and they will taste just like they did when you first bought them!

Thanks, Julie and Darla, for the help! I was thinking that, too, about freezing a small container just to give it a try. I actually just found out when I made this batch of relish that cranberries are freezable. I never knew it before, but saw that on the bag when I was looking over the recipes they had there. Shopping tomorrow and will probably buy a couple more bags of them. Hopefully, they will still be on sale because I got a great bargain on them the last time!
Thanks again! And Julie, that apple/cranberry pie sounds scrumptious!! Never made that! Could you post your recipe please?
And yes, cranberry bread is the best!!!

My mother-in-law used to make cranberry relish and yes, she did freeze it. It kept quite well for a couple of months. Since she's no longer with us, I have tried to make the relish but it never turns out quite like hers.

Thanks, H.M., for the freezing tip. I did put a small container of it into the freezer last week when I made another batch. Thought I'd wait a couple weeks and then try it to see how it is and go from there.
The recipe I have for Cranberry Relish came from the VBB site. It is delicious and so easy to make! It was a swapped recipe from H. Lane.
A lot of the great recipes I make I find here on VBB!!

If the relish is not as crispy as you like when you thaw it out it would still make a great addition to an apple pie, apple crisp, an apple cake or a stuffing for pork or chicken.
I love cranberry relish just as much as the sauce it is great on sandwiches of all kinds. Try using it on a turkey burger or one of the Boca Burgers. I also like using it in a plain old salad.

Nikki, this isn't a crispy relish. It's just made with a bag of fresh cranberries, apple, orange, jello, and sugar. It's very easy to make and is actually something like the cranberry whole berry sauce.....only tastes a whole lot better!! Hmmm....you did give me some great ideas there....I may try putting some into apple pie and apple crisp. That sounds pretty good indeed! Thanks! I might even try adding a touch to my homemade applesauce.
That reminds me....last year we had some peaches and pears that were starting to spoil and someone told me I should make them into a sauce. Never heard of doing that before, but it was worth a try cause I didn't want to throw them away. I made both....peach sauce and pear sauce. We ate them plain but I also added a little bit into some containers of applesauce. Gave it a great new taste! Sure is fun to experiment with various foods, isn't it?

In fact, I made two more batches of the relish yesterday for supper and I put the rest into the freezer in containers. They go great with a meal of chicken or turkey, with peas, stuffing, and applesauce.

HI carol your cranberry relish sounds like what we make,We experiment with different flavor jello,black cherry is a favorite and we always add chopped walnut s to ours .Our family eats this like a dessert with cool whip or real whip cream on top.Oh I can hardly wait .

Gale, that sounds absolutely delicious!!! I like varying the recipe from time to time. It's fun! I hadn't thought of black cherry jello, but that sounds good, too! I've used raspberry and strawberry. Was considering trying orange jello sometime. It's a great dish though for anytime of year, not just holidays! Thanks for your great ideas!!

Just wanted to let you know I picked up a box of black cherry jello on my shopping trip the other day and I'm going to make a fresh batch of cranberry relish with it! Thanks for the idea!!! I've also now got some oranges on hand so I can make it exactly like the recipe calls for with oranges and apples!
I'll try to remember to let you know how we liked it with the black cherry!

Hi Carol,I think your recipe sounds like what I make,I grind the cranberries,orange and 2 apples,Dissolve jello in one cup of hot water and add sugar,mix in the fruit and we add 1 cup of chopped walnuts this is a family favorite.

Gale, that does sound very similar. But my recipe calls for making the jello like usual....the small box, with one cup of hot water to dissolve, then add one cup cold water. Put in frig until it starts to set slightly and then mix with the other ingredients. It does also take sugar, I think one cup. I'll have to check the recipe to be sure. It makes a big batch and it is delicious! I haven't had a chance to make any up yet using the black cherry jello because I've been busy doing up winter squashes for our freezer. Then yesterday, in between doing that, I made an apple pie and chocolate chip cookies. Seems I've been living in the kitchen lately!!

Oh the kitchen is a good place to be,I spend most of my time out there and wouldn't have it any other way.My Mom started using the different berry flavored jelly,her favorite flavor was the black cherry,the original recipe called for lemon.We always looked forward to this,My husband loves this and he can't eat cranberries due to a medication he has to be on.I hope you like it wth the new jello flavor.

Thanks, Gale.....everything keeps popping up and I still haven't had a chance to make the relish!! Hoping today or tomorrow! And yep, will let you know how we liked it with the black cherry. Thanks so much for that tip!!
