4 cups flour
1/2 t. baking powder
1 t salt
21 T soft butter (2 sticks + 5 T)
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 large eggs
1 T milk
1 T vanilla
8 oz bittersweet chocolate chopped (I used mini chips)

Whisk together flour, baking powder and salt.
Beat butter, gradually add sugar; Add eggs one at a time beating on low for 30 seconds.  Add milk
and vanilla.  Reduce speed to low and add flour mixture until barely incorporated..  On very low
add chocolate until evenly distributed.
Divide dough into 3 equal parts forming each into a log about 21/2 -3 inches thick.  Wrap each
in plastic wrap and freeze at least 2 hours and up to 1 month.
Heat oven to 375. Line baking sheets with parchment. Let frozen dough sit at room temperature
for 5 minutes. Slice each log into 20-24 thin rounds.  Space at least 1 inch apart on sheets.
Bake 12-15 minutes or until edges are barely starting to brown.

I got a few over 6 dozen and my logs were about 2 1/2 inches or a little smaller.  I had to use a wavy edge knife to cut
them and let them sit more than 5 minutes.

Thanks for the recipe, Judy! I haven't made sugar cookies in ages. I usually make shortbread instead. I'm seriously thinking of trying your recipe, as it does sound tempting with the added chocolate.

I think those cookies were sort of shortbread-like with the little chips in them.  Very good and I will make them again.  I think some sugar cookie recipes are a bit shortbread-like.  The reason I used the mini chips is that the recipe said to be sure the chocolate was chopped into pieces less than 1/4 inch because it would be hard to cut neat slices if you ran into a big chunk.

Judy - Thank you for the great sounding cookie recipe.  I like making cookie dough that I can make in to a log and cut later to bake at my convenience.  I think we have found a new recipe to use this year.
