I SHOULD be making Halloween Party Mix, which I almost know by heart, but not quite.  It appeared on the back of the package for candy-coated Halloween shaped chocolate bits several years ago. It's a type of caramel corn. I have adapted to the lack of candy-coated chocoalte shapes and will post my "adjusted" recipe which has to vary a bit based on what's available year to year.

I know the original called for popcorn, peanutes, cereal squares, and pretzels baked for an hour in a caramel syrup with yougurt pretzels and the candy bits added when cool. It was not as heavy as regular candy corn.  I have no idea on proportions and times. I am hoping someone here saved the recipe. Anyone? Please? Thanks in advanve.

I found this recipe on tasteofhome.com. It sounds similar to what you are looking for.

Ingredients

  • 1 package (11 ounces) pretzels
  • 1 package (10-1/2 ounces) miniature peanut butter filled butter-flavored crackers
  • 1 cup dry roasted peanuts
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 package (10 ounces) M&M's
  • 1 package (18-1/2 ounces) candy corn

Directions

  • In a large bowl, combine the pretzels, crackers and peanuts. In a large saucepan, combine the sugar, butter and corn syrup. Bring to a boil over medium heat; boil for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat; stir in vanilla and baking soda (mixture will foam). Pour over pretzel mixture and stir until coated.
  • Transfer to a greased 15-in. x 10-in. x 1-in. baking pan. Bake at 250° for 45 minutes, stirring every 10-15 minutes. Break apart while warm. Toss with M&M's and candy corn. Cool completely. Store in airtight containers. Yield: 4 quarts.

Thanks, Verlee, but actually it's similar to one posted by VBB.  My recipe has brown sugar and white yogurt pretzels, but is still similar to the one I described. Thanks for your hunting!

I have never made one of those cereal/pretzles/nuts mixes.   Maybe it's getting time for me to try.  That sure would make a more healthy treat for my Sunday night kids than candy or cookies.

I am not so sure it is a lot healthier, Nancy.  By the time you add cereal and candy or chocolate it is probably almost the same as eating cookies.  Just a few non sugar items to add bulk so you can "pretend" it is good for you.  LOL

i found this

HALLOWEEN PARTY MIX

This is a great treat to make ahead of time, you can  bag it up in Halloween treat bags or place it around in bowls for your Halloween party guests! It tastes terrific, sweet and salty! We make up a few batches of it when we are having a Halloween movie party, it's gone before everything else!

Ingredients:
3/4 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup butter
2 teaspoons vanilla
4 cups tiny pretzel twists (don't use sticks)
4 cups bite sized toasted wheat squares
10 ounces salted cashews, halves & pieces

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Spray a large casserole dish with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.

In a small sauce pan, place corn syrup and butter. Cook over medium heat until mixture dissolves, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.

In a large bowl, combine pretzels, cashews and cereal. Pour sugar mixture over pretzel mixture and toss to coat evenly. Spread evenly into baking dish and bake for 30 minutes, stirring after 15 minutes to crisp evenly.

Spoon onto and spread evenly onto waxed paper. Let cool completely and break into clusters. Store in an airtight container until needed at room temperature.

Retaj - thanks, that sounds good.  Could I use anything in place of wheat squares?

I've never made any of the party mixes.  Haven't bought any of the pre mixes.  Guess I should try one soon.  Maybe I'll try the chex pre mix!!!
