I'll have to think about that.  My mother used to make it a lot.  I don't think she ever used a recipe though.  She'd take bread broken up into pieces, mix egg and milk with sugar and vanilla, add cinnamon and raisins and bake it.  Sometimes if she had some chocolate cake that had gotten stale, she'd use that along with the bread, omit the raisins and cinnamon and we had chocolate bread pudding.  We loved that.

Oh yes, I'd love a new bread pudding recipe too. It's one of my favorite desserts. I have fond memories of an aunt who made the best bread pudding, but no one in my family has her recipe (she's been gone for about 30 years). I've tried several recipes that sound like her's, but I haven't found "the one" yet.

I make a peach bread pudding that hubby loves.  I think I've posted it before, but if there is any interest, I'll post it again.  The full recipe makes two 9 x 12 pans.  Recipe can be halved.  I also make a vanilla sauce to serve over it, though no sauce is necessary.  The sauce is tasty, as well as the bread pudding.

PEACH BREAD PUDDING - remember this makes two 9 x 12 pans of bread pudding, so halve this if you don't want two pans of it.

6 1/4 cups milk 1/2 pound margarine or butter - guess what I use!! lol
1 large can peach slices, drained dash of salt
9 eggs 1 cup raisins (craisins, dried cherries or whatever you like)
4 Tbs vanill extract 1 pound bread
3 1/2 cups sugar  Dash of cinnamon
(I use a little less sugar)

Combine milk, peaches and eggs in large bowl and mix.  Add salt, vanilla and sugar and mix again.  Melt margarine or butter and mix with other ingredients.  Sprinkle raisins in bottome of two 9 x 13" pans.

Pull bread apart into small pieces, about 2" squares.  I use crust and all.  Don't squeeze or mash the bread.  Add half of the bread to each pan.  Pour half of the egg-milk mixture over bread in each pan, making sure all the bread is thoroughly covered and moist.

Sprinkle lightly with cinnamon.

Bake at 325 degrees until golden brown.

Here is the recipe for the vanilla sauce I sometimes pour over my serving of bread pudding and this can be halved also:

3 cups of milk 1/2 cup sugar
dash of salt 1 Tbs cornstarch
drop of yellow food coloring sprinkle of nutmeg
1 Tbs vanilla extract

Mix milk, food coloring and vanilla in a pan bowl.  Mix sugar, salt and cornstarch in another bowl.  Add sugar mixture to milk mixture and stir until lumps are gone.  Simmer over low heat until thickened.  Pour over bread pudding and top with a sprinkle of nutmeg.

Thank you ....... this sounds so good.
I use plain, common thin-sliced wheat bread.  What kind do you use?

Nancy, I confess, I use the cheapest loaf I can find because with all that other good stuff in the recipe, you don't really taste "bread"!!

Meant to add, white bread.  Your wheat bread should be fine.

Thank you ......... I want to try this soooo much but even 1/2 of the recipe is too much for me.  I'm going to save it and look forward to the next time I need a big one.  I'm assuming that it can be served cold.

Thank you for posting your recipe for peach bread pudding. My husband loves everything peach so I will try the half recipe.  Your vanilla sauce sounds good, I think I could make that and be happy just eating that throughout the day!  Oh my, I think my sweet tooth has gotten the better of me.

Bakery, l will make half the recipe as one 9x13 pan will be enough for us.  Last week one of my stores had cheap white bread for 99¢ a loaf  I didn't buy any because I only buy whole wheat, but for bread pudding I could.  The vanilla sauce would dress it ip. Thanks for posting the recipe.  It is about time for me to bake something, as the oatmeal cake is almost gone.
