July 14, 2013: New Zealand celebrations
This Bastille Day, Kiwis and French will again celebrate together the commemoration of July 14, 1789.
“That day, on July 14, 1790, the revolution has given to France self-consciousness”, this date represents a “symbol of the fraternal union of all parts of France and of all French citizens in freedom and equality. July 14, 1790 is the best day in French history, and perhaps more broadly, in the whole world history.”
- Henri Martin, Senate sitting of June 29, 1880
As it has been since 1880, when July 14 became an official national holiday, France will celebrate this annual event.
