I'm having a problem with my toll house cookie batter being very thin despite following the recipe.  When I cook them they spread out instead of looking like a cookie. Please help

I'm having a problem with my toll house cookie batter being very thin despite following the recipe.  When I cook them they spread out instead of looking like a cookie. Please help

Faith ... I always use a couple extra tablespoons of flour when making cookies because I want thick, chewy ones.
And I always chill the dough in the 'friedge for several hours ... I like overnight chilling best.

sometimes this happens if you use margerine, shortening, or oil instead of butter; or maybe extra large eggs instead of large.
I've seen this discussed before, too bad we can't get back to that now. In baking, we're told that it must be exact, but all bakers know that many recipes for the same cookie with differences in ingredients will still come out close to the same. But i've found differences in texture of the same cookie recipe made with different fats. I newer use ex-large or medium eggs though, because most recipes call for large.
